In 1992, Natsume released the game known as Pocky & Rocky for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. In the game, one can play as a Japanese shrine maiden named Pocky, or the tanuki called Rocky. They must defend a group of goblins from evil forces.
The game is a top-down scrolling shooter game in which you must blast evil creatures with Pocky's ofudas, or Rocky's leaves. The game would garner much critical praise for its music, graphics, and gameplay. The game would also get two sequels: Pocky & Rocky 2 in 1994 for the SNES, and Pocky & Rocky with Becky in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance. In fact, the original Pocky & Rocky itself is a sequel. It follows up on the 1986 Taito arcade game KiKi KaiKai. In 2007, the game would get a spiritual sequel for the PlayStation 2 and the Wii: Heavenly Guardian.
A third sequel, Pocky & Rocky Reshrined, was intended to be released last year, but it's been delayed to this spring. Let's look at the trailer!
The graphics make the game look very cute.
A certain trope definitely applies when it comes to Pocky.
Boom, baby!
You know, I first heard of the tanuki from Super Mario Bros. 3. That game spelled it "tanooki". I thought it was some kind of mythical creature created from the game.
A bamboo scarecrow. This new take on the Scarecrow is weeeeeird...
Hey, new character! I wonder how she plays differently from Pocky or Rocky.
Ame-no-Uzume is an actual figure in Japanese myth. She's the goddess of the dawn, and the arts. Makes sense that she'd like dancing. Dancing is an art.
Based on that text, this game is set in the past?
It's appropriate that this new character, Ikazuchi, has electrical powers. "Ikazuchi" is the Japanese word for "thunder".
The text seems to imply that Hotaru Gozen may be a boss that you can recruit as a playable character.
Skeleton hands, demon bells, man this game is delightfully crazy.
Well, this game looks delightfully fun and cute. It looks like the kind of game you can literally just pick up and play. Something to play if you're just looking to kill some time and have some fun. I think I'll give this game a shot.
