Marvel's Avengers A-Day Trailer, My Thoughts

A couple of years ago, Square-Enix teased what would be known as "The Avengers Project", a video game focusing on Earth's Mightiest Heroes. We heard practically nothing about it since...until E3 2019. It was then that something was finally unveiled about the game: the trailer! Yup, we finally got to see some footage of the game, as well as learn a bit about what the Avengers will be dealing with here! Let's take a look!

Welcome to sunny San Francisco!

Huh. I didn't know that the Avengers had a tower in San Francisco. Would make a nice headquarters for a West Coast-based branch. Just a thought.

"Never meet your heroes". I guess it depends on who you consider a hero.

It's Avengers Day! One of the best days of the year! They got stands that make really cool Captain America shield-themed cookies.

And of course, the Iron Man hams it up a bit. Its why we love him. But of course, in a superhero universe like this, a celebration like this is bound to go horribly wrong.

Aaaaaaand there it is.

Crazy driver!

Somebody really hates the Golden Gate Bridge.

I think this is some gameplay here. Looks neat.

I don't know why, but Hulk just casually kicking that tank river away makes me chuckle.

Hey, Taskmaster! I know that skull mask and hood anywhere! Between this and the upcoming Black Widow movie, I get the feeling he'll finally get a place as one of the upper echelon villains of the Marvel Universe.

Ohhh, the repair bill for the bridge is going to be high.

Has anyone considered the idea of getting Natasha her own jetpack? I mean, she would find her own jetpack useful.

I'm getting the feeling that crystal was not a dilithium one.

And down goes the helicarrier!

Man, the city went downhill quick. From what I understand, the game takes a five-year time skip, where the Avengers had disbanded after that helicarrier went down, which wrecked the city...and Captain America supposedly got blown up. Also, all superheroes got outlawed. That will totally not bite someone in the butt.

And yyyyup, this is why you need the Avengers.

Abomination looks good.

Hey, is that the Endo-Sym armor? Awesome! I hope we get to see other Iron Man suits. My personal favorite is the Silver Centurion.

Yes, it's the MCU version, but it looks practically exactly like its comic counterpart. I love that suit.

Well, I'm sure some will think the graphics will need some work. Keep in mind, graphics do continue to get polished up. And this game is due out next year. So, there is time to refine them. But I am very excited, and my curiosity is peaked.

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you liked it, spread it around! See you next time!

America vs. The Justice Society #2 (February 1985)

Back in April 2018, I reviewed the first issue of the 1980s mini-series America vs. The Justice Society. It told the tale of the World's First Super-Team as they had to fight fraudulent charges of treason leveled against them by one of their own: the deceased Batman. This led the JSA to undergo a hearing to prove their innocence, while we got to learn about the history of the Golden Age Guardians. It also led to some tension between two people close to the late Caped Crusader: his ward Dick "Robin" Grayson, and his daughter Helena "Huntress" Wayne. So, how will the JSA get out of this scrape? Can they prove their innocence? Let's find out in America vs. The Justice Society #2!

The cover is awesome. It's a Jerry Ordway piece. Ordway is always a great fit for the World's First Superteam. It's basically the Spectre commanding the committee to release the JSA...or die. It does fit the character, as the Spectre is known for being...rather brutal in his dispensing of justice. I also like seeing the JSA freak out, as if they're like "YOU ARE NOT HELPING HERE, CORRIGAN!" He's clearly not helping things here. It's a great cover. Would have loved to have seen him do the interiors. A story like this was made for Ordway's art.

"Trial by Congress"
Writers: Roy and Dann Thomas
Penciler: Michael Bair
Inker: Alfredo Alcala
Colorist: Carl Gafford
Letterer: David Cody Weiss
Editors: Roy Thomas, Janice Race
Executive Editor: Dick Giordano

The story begins with the members of the JSA ready for their hearing.

I like the little quote from Sir John Harrington. True fact, he's also the reason why toilets today flush. I am not joking. And what is Flash doing there? And Johnny Thunder really regrets getting drunk last night. The hearing goes through some procedures that assure that this is not a trial (Although if it's determined that Batman's charges are true, then criminal charges will be levied against the Society). The JSA just want to clear their names. They know Batman's accusations are false. The three committee members doing the investigation identify themselves.

Meet Congresspeople Linda Valdez (???-CA), Jason Philips (???-NY), and Senator William Hopkins (???-MI). Hopkins will be chairing this hearing. With them is Dick Grayson, their legal counsel. Helena Wayne hopes he'll be fair. Starman alerts the chairman that Sandman had recently suffered a stroke, but the Sandman wants no special favors. As the media and public are allowed inside, Wildcat grumbles that he feels like they're being set up. Among the people there are Superman, Flash, Hawkman, and Dr. Fate's wives: Lois Lane-Kent, Joan Garrick, Shiera Hall/Hawkgirl, and Inza Nelson, who is shooting him a wink. Wonder Woman's husband Steve Trevor is on an Amazon island, so he can't be there. The story hints he's dealing with some injuries of some kind.

With that, the hearing begins. Chairman Hopkins announces that they are investigating two things: The accusation that the JSA were secretly Nazi agents, and the alleged sabotage by the JSA of a bomb-defense formula in 1941 that would have prevented the attack on Pearl Harbor that year. Helena Wayne announces that she intends to prove that despite the diary indeed being produced by the late Batman, the accusations within it are utterly false.

Chairman Hopkins asks the first question: If the JSA did encounter Adolf Hitler in November 1940 (as Batman's diary recounts)...why didn't they capture him then. It could have ended WWII early, preventing a lot of deaths...and a lot of other horrors. Flash mocks the diary as a fountain of lies, and proceeds to tell that tale.

Hitler had used the magical Spear of Destiny in his possession to summon some mythical Valkyries to attack the United States. The heroes tried, but were unable to stop him. Only when Superman showed up was the tide turned in the heroes' favor. It led FDR to bring them together. It basically is a retelling of the origin of the JSA.

Congresswoman Valdez raises a question: If the JSA were so opposed to everything the Nazis stood for...why were the roster practically only white guys? Where were no women or POC on their team? Valdez's view of the JSA is understandable. The roster never seemed to get more diverse, even as the decades passed. It is odd. Alan Scott responds they worked with anyone who showed up. The JSA never turned anyone away due to race or gender. This is...somewhat true when you consider the existence of the All-Star Squadron. Not to mention that in the New 52, Alan Scott would be revamped as an openly gay man.

After the group was formed, Superman and Batman would only be honorary members, being busy with their own adventures not attending the JSA's first official meeting on November 22, 1940. But the JSA still stood eight strong: Flash, Green Lantern, Atom, Dr. Fate, Spectre, Hourman, Sandman, and Hawkman. All of them are at the hearing...except for the Spectre. He's out gallivanting in other worlds right now.

We then get a real telling of their first adventure, told by Jay Garrick. The Flash raced to Washington DC. J. Edgar Hoover (yes, him) asked the JSA to flush out a Nazi spymaster that was operating in the United States. They tracked the spymaster, a man named Fritz Klaver, to his estate in Toledo, Ohio.

They managed to save the life of Johnny Thunder and Atom in the process. Thunder wasn't really a member of the JSA at the time, but he managed to get involved in their early adventures. The Batman diary claims that Klaver was a second-string spy that Hitler found useless. Atom points out Batman was not there...and Pratt was. Wearing his first costume, too. Superman adds he was on Klaver's tail at the time, and he was considered the greatest threat to the country since the Abwehr spy ring. Klaver was no second-stringer.

The JSA's next case was busting up a crime syndicate led by a man named Mr. X. They ended up discovering that the crimelord was actually just some guy they had stumbled over several times. I want to read that story, because it sounds hilarious. At that point, Flash stepped down as an active JSA member because of his own adventures taking up too much of his time. It was here Johnny Thunder was brought into the group proper...after a bit of hazing. Yeah, hazing. Our heroes, everybody!

Shiera Hall, watching from the stands, recalls that Hawkgirl also helped with the Mr. X case. Next, the committee looks at the time the JSA raised a million dollars for war orphans. The Batman Diary charged that the money never benefitted the orphans. Alan Scott (at that point, he stepped down from JSA Chairmanship, transferring the gavel to Hawkman, who held it ever since. He and Hourman had also stepped down from the team, their places taken by Dr. Mid-Nite and Starman) answers that one: It's a lie. He and Dr. Fate did deliver that money to President Roosevelt.

Luckily, they came in time to save the President from a group of attacking men that seemed to be living shadows. It was part of a plot to kill ten Americans, including President Roosevelt. All the JSA were able to prevent the deaths...except for the original Green Lantern. He was fighting Dr. Fate's old enemy Wotan, who assaulted him in a way he couldn't counter (likely using wood. Alan Scott's ring is useless against wood)...and a child got killed in the process.

It was an old shame for Alan. Even after all these years, it haunts him. It was the case that drove him to quit the JSA altogether. However, there were other implications to that case. Superman takes up the explanation. It started with a man named Ian Karkull.

Like Wotan, Karkull was one of Dr. Fate's foes. He was a mad scientist who wanted his genius recognized, no matter what the cost. He found a way to look into the future, learning who the next nine presidents would be after FDR died in office. The JSA were able to save the future Presidents...except for Alan. The child who died despite Alan's best efforts could have become a future President of the United States.

It puts a hush over the crowd. This...this is huge. That child Alan failed to save...could have been a President? How would they have changed things? How would history have gone?

Valdez changes the subject by pointing out Hourman left around this time. He explains that he gets his powers from a drug of his own creation called Miraclo. With it, he gains super strength, speed, and stamina for one hour. It was at that time he realized that the drug that gave him his power...was addictive. Yup, Rex Tyler was a drug addict. He would then create a device that could give him the Hourman powers without the addictive side effects. He then returned to action as a member of the All-Star Squadron. It wouldn't be until the 1960s that he joined the JSA again.

Starman adds that during that adventure, the JSA were exposed to waves of chronal energy that was trapped in the body of Karkull. Thanks to that, the JSA members' aging was slowed down, and they could remain active in superhero work for decades. Elsewhere in the nation's capital, a figure is watching the hearing. And they're hoping the committee destroys the JSA.

Doctor Mid-Nite clarifies that Green Lantern had been gone from the team for weeks before he joined up. He had been a solo crimefigther for some time before that, and had been fighting a madness-inducing villain called "Dr. Elba". He called on the Society to help him out, shortly after Starman joined. They both had their JSA trial by fire on that same adventure. Not long afterwards, J. Edgar Hoover sent them to Latin and South America to fight the Nazis there.

Senator Hopkins points out that it was right afterwards that the JSA failed to get the bomb-defense formula. Remember, this was one of the things that the hearing was about.

Dr. Mid-Nite confirms that there is a little truth to the Batman Diary: Shortly before Pearl Harbor, He, Hawkman and Sandman did save some scientists from armed gunmen. However, they were Nazi spies, not Russian like the Batman Diary claimed.

The scientists had essentially found a way to make time travel possible. The heroes went forward to the year 2941. They had managed to bring back information the scientists (known as the "Time Trust") used to build a device that could hopefully generate a forcefield that could protect America from being bombed. The prototype worked, but the second time they tried it, it failed and got scrapped. Dr. Mid-Nite admits that the device could have been sabotaged, but the JSA were certainly not behind it if that was the case.

None of the Time Trust can testify now because they've vanished afterwards. A couple of them are confirmed to have died, but the others could still be out there. Chairman Hopkins then goes on to another reason this committee have convened: Where was the JSA during Pearl Harbor? And why didn't they prevent the attack?

Wonder Woman offers to take this question, as her husband Steve Trevor is recuperating from some injuries (Thanks to events in the Infinity Inc. comic), and she's hoping to return to his side while he recovers. And speaking of Infinity Inc., we get to check on them.

They're watching the hearing. Wonder Woman offers to bring her "Magic Sphere" from Paradise Island, as it can show the events of that time. However, Congresswoman Valdez brings up a point. Wonder Woman's Magic Sphere can simulate events...so it could be used to make something up. It could be used to commit perjury. Wonder Woman doesn't appreciate the insinuation, and threatens to tear the place apart. Nice, Wondy. Way to help there.

Dr. Fate is able to calm her down, though. Helena Wayne announces she's sent for two other heroes who have a connection with this point in time, but were not accused. And here they are!

Meet Shining Knight and Chuck Grayson, aka Robotman. Well, Robotman's brain in Grayson's body. He was a relative of Dick Grayson who died. Also, this is not the same one that's in Doom Patrol, that's a different brain. Comics are WEIRD. How did he get involved with the JSA in December 1941? Well, allow him to explain.

He was at the Lincoln Memorial, lamenting that his life sucked because he was a brain in a robot body. He saw Hawkman, Atom, and Dr. Mid-Nite fighting "The Monster", a Jekyll-and-Hyde type villain. The other members of the JSA then (plus Wonder Woman, who was not a member yet) had been captured by other supervillains and left at a volcano near Hawaii. The four heroes, alongside Liberty Belle, Johnny Quick, and Plastic Man, were recruited by FDR to form the nucleus of what would be known as the All-Star Squadron. Shining Knight confirms this.

At the time, the Knight was one of the Seven Soldiers of Victory. He was in Hawaii at the time to discover a young woman already there. Her name was Dannette Reilly, and that adventure would cause to gain pyrokinetic abilities which allowed her to become the heroine Firebrand.

Remember my review of Crisis on Infinite Earths #1 from January of last year? Then you may know of her from that comic. Anyway, it was during her origin adventure that she had been kidnapped by the time-travelling supervillain known as Per Degaton. However, there was no criminal record for him until 1947. Firebrand got her powers in 1941. Well, yeah. He's a time-traveler. he went back to 1941 in an attempt to change the outcome of WWII and conquer the world. However, he would end up back in '47, forgetting all that happened in the process. The Spectre then gathered up all the heroes there and dropped them in San Francisco, and the All-Star Squadron was truly born.

Okay, so the heroes couldn't prevent Pearl Harbor. So, why didn't they go take on the Axis Powers afterwards? Well, they tried. But there was a problem.

You see, both Adolf Hitler and Hideki Tojo managed to get themselves a pair of magical artifacts. Hitler had the Spear of Destiny, and Tojo had a magic stone (described as a prototype of the Holy Grail). Using mechanical means, the two artifacts were used to create a mystical shield. If any heroes that used magic or were vulnerable to it entered into Axis territory...they would be magically forced to fight for the axis. And this affected the mot powerful heroes of the era, like Spectre, Dr. Fate, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman...and Superman. Yeah.

When America entered the war, the JSA disbanded. Out of perhaps a sense of misguided patriotism, the heroes went off and joined the armed forces, fighting as soldiers during the war. Despite this, their time in the armed forces lasted only a couple of months, as they were lured into a trap and captured by a new foe: The original Brain Wave.

This led to Wonder Woman finally getting to join the JSA, as she was one of the heroes captured. After that, they regrouped as the Justice Battalion, working under the War Department. Wonder Woman recounts their adventures during that time: Battling the Japanese saboteurs known as the Black Dragons, an adventure in "hyper-dimensional space", and even managed to get food to the various resistance movements fighting the Nazis in Europe.

With that, Wonder Woman has had enough and prepares to fight her way out. After all, she understandably thinks this whole hearing is insane. However, she's stopped by a surprise arrival.

The Spectre offers to basically destroy the planet and send the JSA to another world, but they say no. Doing so would not help them out here, you see. And with that, he leaves. Yeah, he just leaves. With that, Helena Wayne decides to call a recess. She and Dick Grayson talk a bit, which shows how this hearing has really divided them. Both of them considered the late Batman a father, but Dick is clearly the one who shows the stronger bond. It makes sense, as he knew Bruce much longer than Helena did. He thinks Helena is trying to make him look like a fool. However, Bruce did turn against the JSA before he died, and she can't let him smear them...even from beyond the grave. She may have to reveal his secret identity to the committee.

Another player is lurking: The Wizard. He's watching the hearing, and wondering when he gets his day in court. A.K. O'Fallon (remember him from last issue? The newspaper man who plotted against the JSA?) assures him he's got Senator Hopkins in the palm of his hand. He does listen to him, after all. And reads his papers. The story ends with the Wizard vowing to destroy the Justice Society, as he turns the TV into a monster, then a bug. He crushes the bug with his hand. A.K. O'Fallon may want revenge on the Society as well, but the Wizard will destroy him if he gets in the way.

This comic was alright. Again, what it basically is...is a recap of the JSA's history. That's pretty much it. We do get some villainous plotting in the story, and the Wizard's scene is neat. It makes sense that an egomaniacal man like him would take advantage of this to smear the JSA.

I also liked seeing how the hearing impacted Dick Grayson and Helena Wayne. The late Earth-2 Batman was an important part of both their lives, and their stances make sense. Dick knew Bruce decades longer than Helena Wayne did, so he would naturally gravitate towards Batman. Bruce Wayne was a father to both of them (biologically in Helena's case), but Helena can't let the JSA be smeared by the diary of the seemingly insane late Dark Knight. Made for some good drama.

A thing I did love about this issue was the art. Some of the panel layouts were really cool, and some of those images looked like they would be right at home on a Golden Age comic cover. All in all, I think this is one of those mini-series issues that is best read as part of the whole mini than on its own. If you want to read this for yourself, I recommend tracking down the 2015 trade paperback America vs. The Justice Society.

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you enjoyed it, spread it around! I am looking into other options for further supporting this blog. See you next time, when Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes continue their battle to get back to glory...

Top Gun: Maverick Trailer, My Thoughts.

In 1986, the film Top Gun was released in theaters by Paramount Pictures. The film was directed by Tony Scott, and the screenplay was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr. It was inspired by an article in California magazine called "Top Guns", written by Ehud Yonay. Bet you didn't know that, huh?

The film starred Tom Cruise as US Naval Aviator Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who attends Topgun, the Naval Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar. While there, Maverick finds romance with instructor Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood (Kelly McGillis), and also develops a rivalry with fellow trainee Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (played by Val Kilmer) as he learns to be a team player while in the air.

Top Gun would get mixed reviews on release, but was a box office success, grossing $356 million against a $15 million budget. It was praised for its action, aerial stunts, and the performances of Cruise and McGillis. It would also win a Best Original Song Oscar for Berlin's "Take My Breath Away". Heck, it's soundtrack was considered one of the most popular film soundtracks of all time, getting nine Platinum records.

In 2015, the film was added to the National Film Registry, considering it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Since 2010, a sequel for the film has been in development, with Cruise reprising his role as Maverick. Joseph Kosinski is sitting in the director's seat for this one. Let's take a look at the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick!

Ah, the desert. Quiet and peaceful. A great place to de-stress and let go of the tensions of the modern world WHERE DID THAT JET COME FROM?!

Still feeling the need for speed after all these years, Petey?

Maverick is definitely a military lifer.

Join the Navy. You get to be on cool ships.

Not that mysterious, Maverick won't grow up.

Now that's a cool shot.

Hey, Jennifer Connelly!

I like Phoenix already. She seems neat.

Nice aerial shots there. Knowing Tom Cruise, I would not be surprised if he was legit flying that plane.

"I ain't old! I can still fly rings around these young'uns!" Heh heh heh.

I am disappointed by the lack of "Danger Zone". Kenny Loggins is doing a new version of the song for the film, though. That's cool.

I get the feeling from this trailer that the film is going to be essentially Maverick having a bit of a midlife crisis. Think about it. He's achieved so much in his decades in the service, but he hasn't let himself advance or retire. It's like he can't let go of being a pilot. Maybe this film is about accepting that and letting himself move on with his life? I'll give it a watch.

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you liked it, spread it around! See you next time!

Text Play: Pokemon Mega Adventure #22

First of all, I would like to apologize for the incredibly long delay in getting this out. I try to do one of these at least once a month, but real life (and freakin' Mount Snarlet I HATE THIS PLACE) made that impossible. I appreciate all of your patience, and with that...Welcome back to the Akiba Region! Here's my 22nd entry in my Text Play through Pokémon Mega Adventure!

Still struggling with Mt. Snarlet. However, I found a YouTube video that helped me find my way through, and I just followed my way through. While there, I found another Mega Stone.

It's an Aerodactylite. After collecting it, I headed on through, guided by the YouTube video. Eventually I found my way through a cave and HOLY COW! I ended up in this cave full of Golbats, Noiverns, and Swoobats! This game is trolling players! Seriously! Who thought this was a good idea?! This is insane! I can't take five steps without one of them trying to fight me! I can certainly understand the Angry Video Game Nerd's hatred for bats now.

I did find another Dragon Scale here. I kept moving on, guided by the YouTube video. Encountered a LOT more Noiverns. God, I hate them so much right now. Eventually found myself in another chamber, where I found an Everstone.

Luckily, there is a saving grace to all of this. If you run away from or defeat all the wild Pokémon you encounter, they go away, so backtracking is not so bad. I eventually did manage to escape...after going through MORE bat Pokémon! I hate this cave so freakin' much! I eventually managed to get outside, but I still have a ways to go. I hate this cave. I did find a Comet Shard.

I continued on through this endless cave, finding a Max Revive and battling a Team Prime Ace. Eventually, I found myself in a Double Battle with a pair of Team Prime Aces. I couldn't beat them. Which basically meant I had to go back to the Pokémon Center...and start all over again. I restarted my game and decided to try and backtrack back to the Pokémon Center. I ended up stuck in a battle, and got beaten. So, I lost quite a bit of money anyway, but made it back to the Pokémon Center.

I have to take the opportunity to rant about something that annoys me. I wanted to put my Primarina back in my team (I swapped that Pokémon out for Poliwag, now Poliwhirl), but evidently, it can't learn Surf. You have got to be kidding me. Have you seen Primarina?! It's a mermaid/seal thing! It can swim!

Look at Primarina! Look at this Pokémon! You mean to tell me that this thing! This thing! This mermaid/seal thing can't learn to summon a wave of water or carry me across the water?! That's stupid!

Anyway, remember last time when I said that I found a YouTube video that went through this cave? Well, I used it to get me through the cave...almost. I had to go through the same Team Prime Aces that kicked my head in last time...and they kicked my head in again. So, time to go back and grind. And grind I did. Grinding and grinding. Endless grinding. I got my Pokémon past level 70, so I'm hoping to try again.

As I said, I found a YouTube video that helped me find my way through this freakin' cave that I hate so freakin' much. I hate this cave. I hate it with all my heart. I want to smack the person who designed this.

Me too, lady. Me too.

Sadly, I didn't really document the items and things I found in this cave, because as I have subtly hinted, I hate this cave, and I want to just get through it. But not to worry, just watch this YouTube video here. This is the very video I used to guide me through this cave. So, thanks to SacredAlmighty for that. I'd make sure to not watch this at work. During my travels around, I did get this.

It's a Salamancite. Another Mega Stone for the collection. I also found another item during my journey.

It's TM28 (Dig).

Eventually, I found myself in a Double Battle. Team Prime Aces Carl and Brenda. They first brought out a pair of Lycanroc, but my Venusaur and Poliwhirl were able to beat them easily with some Razor Leaf and Surf. This battle went straight to hell (Both the Judeo-Christian one and it took a pit stop in the Asgardian Hel for a few laughs) after it, but I managed to win. I also ended up fighting Celestial himself. He was tough. Real tough. This place makes me so freakin' tired.

But I pressed on. I kept pressing on. I had no choice. I wanted out of this cave, and I had gone too far to go back. I trudged on, half my team utterly wrecked. Until I found this.

...Dragnar City Entrance. I did it. I made it through. I FINALLY GOT THROUGH MOUNT SNARLET! I DID IT! I FINALLY DID IT! AHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!

Yeah, I may have lost a little bit of my sanity in the process of going through this cave. Just a little bit. I went straight to the Pokémon Center there (My poor Pokémon got battered so bad), and I met Serena.

She had a couple announcements to make: Ash had won the last badge, and she's going with him to Victory Road. I'm guessing for moral support. He also took down Team Prime's boss. Heh. Let him have them. I've had my fill of Team Prime.

And that's pretty much it for this entry. Next time, we're going to explore Dragnar City. Yay! Join me next time!

Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars #7 (November 1984)

The Secret Wars rage on! Last time, we witnessed Doctor Doom a-plottin', the X-Men a-brawlin', and the Wasp a-dyin'. So what is the fallout from all of this? Will Doom succeed in his plan for ultimate power? Will the X-Men finally get with the program and join the other heroes? Let's find out in my review of Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars #7! Also, on another note, it's appropriate this come out this week as it's the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing, and this story is set in space.

The cover is a Bob Layton piece, and it's pretty cool. You have Captain America front and center, looking like he's torn, that the Star-Spangled Man with a Plan has a LOT on his mind. Around him we see the new Spider-Woman. We also see Titania pummeling She-Hulk, and the X-Men's Rogue, Cyclops, and Wolverine facing off against Absorbing Man, Volcana, and Doctor Doom. Also, we see the deceased Wasp lying on a slab. It's funny because some of this stuff happened in the last issue, ha ha!

"Berzerker!"
Writer: Jim Shooter

The story begins with Johnny Storm discovering that a new player has arrived on this big cosmic board:

Meet Julia Carpenter, aka Spider-Woman II. The other heroes realize she's from Earth, like them. She explains that she's from a suburb of Denver, which ended up part of Battleworld. I wonder why Monica Rambeau didn't discover this? And why didn't the Beyonder include her among the heroes? Julia wants to help, and she demonstrates her power to lift big boulders and throw them. She asks if they're worried that she's on their side, but Cap doubts it. Doom has plenty of power at his side. Although, considering it's Doom we're talking about here, I can imagine him being of the mentality that more is always good.

In a funny moment, Spider-Man grumbles about her stealing his gimmick. Heh. Tony Stark will be doing something about a similar problem in the future. The villains' big red tank from the previous issue arrives at the village and blows some stuff up. The Wrecker pops out and announces that he's got a gift for the heroes. He tosses the Wasp's corpse to them, then they leave. The heroes try to get her to Zsaji, but there's nothing she can do. Well, considering that Wasp was shot in the chest, yeah.

Naturally, the heroes want to get some payback, but Captain America reminds them of something. Galactus is still there, still building his energy-conversion machine. If he completes it, everyone is dead anyway. This leads the heroes to argue over what to do next...and an angry She-Hulk stomps off.

Professor Xavier orders Cyclops, Rogue, and Wolverine to pursue the group of villains they engaged in the last issue. He, Magneto, Nightcrawler, and Storm will meet them on the way. They have a chance to trap Doctor Octopus, Molecule Man, Titania, and the Absorbing Man, and they're going to take it!

On board the four villains' ship, Titania is looking over the injured Molecule Man. This is shown on a screen in Doombase. Volcana sees this and freaks out. She tries to get Klaw to help her get to him...but he's nuts, so he's no help at all. She then goes to the Enchantress, who doesn't care, and calls her fat. Volcana pleads with her to help, so Amora agrees...for a price.

Yeah, Amora is a jerk, but there is something I have to point out. Both she and Klaw refer to Volcana as being a bit overweight. Yeah, Amora does it because she's a jerk, and she hates other women, especially any she feels threatens her in the beauty department. But Klaw refers to her as "plump", and the way Mike Zeck draws her...she doesn't look any bit "plump". I think there was some miscommunication there. Anyway, you know Amora's going to demand her payment in the future...

Anyway, she arrives, and we get a hint that Titania and Volcana were old friends. The X-Men intercept the villains and make them crash their ship. With that, the fight is on. Professor Xavier tries to attack the villains' minds, but has found that the Enchantress has mystically shielded them. Wolverine manages to cut off Absorbing Man's arm (Carl Creel turned himself into rock, so it's hardly gory). Eventually, the X-Men are able to drive the villains to retreating.

On Galactus's spaceship, Doom is growing a bit desperate, although he'll never admit it. He's found many wonderous devices in Galactus's ship, but he wants something that will ensure that he'll be supreme for certain. How much longer can he sneak around before somehow alerting Galactus? Speaking of the...man, I guess, himself...

Galactus himself is working on his machine, and he looks like he's almost done. However, he senses the violent volcanic eruptions that the X-Men had set off. This annoys the cosmic being, as he has to fix the planet. Remember as far as we know, Battleworld may be the only planet left thanks to the Beyonder. If it gets blown up, Galactus starves to death. Yeah, he'd starve to death anyway, but Galactus is not going to just let an opportunity to avert that a little longer just go by. He then senses Doom on his ship. The World-Eater realizes "Hey, there's some jerk rooting around in my house! He's messing up my stuff! Jerk!", and sends him flying.

I can imagine Doom is cursing Reed Richards out the entire trip down, ha ha! And with that taken care of, it's back to work for Galactus. At the Doombase, the villains recover from the thrashing the X-Men gave them. Absorbing Man was able to retain the arm that Wolverine severed and does a little experiment.

Maybe you shouldn't take on Wolverine anymore, Carl. And it's a good thing that it worked. But it's not completely implausible. He did survive being shattered in the form of glass. While this is going down, the Wrecking Crew are trying to get the enraged Lizard into a cage. They succeed, but not without some great effort on their part. Bulldozer of the Crew goes to rest while the others get some chow. He notices that someone tore open the wall to his quarters. It was an angry She-Hulk, who wants to...discuss the death of Wasp with him. In the form of her fists rearranging his face. Her beatdown is witnessed by the rest of the Wrecking Crew...and Titania.

After the Gamma Glamazon takes down the Crew, she and Titania brawl. Yeah, the two end up developing quite a rivalry over the years, and this was where it started. Titania would become the closest thing She-Hulk had to a regular archnemesis. Doctor Doom and Absorbing Man show up to give Titanis some extra muscle...despite her angrily insisting she doesn't want it.

In her own chamber, the Enchantress is miserable. So, Amora being Amora. She's lamenting that they could all die here, which means she can't take over Asgard. Hey Amora, we don't always get what we want in life. She hears a noise, and finds a busted-up Doctor Doom.

He straggles to a bed, and he just mutters that it's all over. Meanwhile, She-Hulk is enduring a beatdown from the Wrecking Crew and Titania...and the green-skinned powerhouse appears to have stopped moving. Meanwhile, Captain America is watching Galactus. The cosmic force has appeared to have finished his conversion apparatus, but doesn't appear to be using it. It confuses Cap. What changed?

Hawkeye comes up and reports that everyone has finally noticed She-Hulk is missing. They figure she went after the villains herself, and she's going to need help. Hulk pleads with Cap to let him find her, as she's family. However, as much as Cap wants to help, they have to monitor Galactus. You know Steve, you could just send Monica out to find her. She can cover the planet rather quickly as a beam of light. She'd find Shulkie in a very short time.

Meanwhile, Colossus is wandering the alien town, still dealing with his injuries. He wants to get back into fighting shape, so he figures Zsaji would be able to help with her healing powers. He finds her leaving the hut where the Wasp's body is being held until burial...but she looks very weak and collapses.

Cap gets a telepathic call from Charles Xavier. He offers to have the X-Men watch Galactus while Cap and the other heroes search for She-Hulk. About time you X-Clowns helped out! Cap agrees, and yep, it's time to storm the Doombase!

This comic was okay, but I think there was some lost potential there for story stuff. I would have liked to have seen the heroes mourn Wasp a bit, especially the Avengers. She was a founder of the group after all. I also would have liked to have seen some more interaction between Colossus and Zsaji. As I said in a past review, Shooter wanted to end the romance between Colossus and Kitty Pryde, and having them interact more would have helped make it more plausible. Also, as I said, I really don't like the X-Men's portrayal here. It was nice to see them finally help the other heroes out.

I did like that we got some hints that Titania and Volcana were old friends. Allows for further fleshing out and character development down the road. I also got a chuckle out of Galactus casually tossing Doctor Doom out of his ship. And since we got a couple of new villains, only right that we get a new hero on board in the form of Julia Carpenter. It's a nice teaser, and the moment where Spider-Man grumbles about her is pretty funny. I also liked seeing the heroes rally together to avenge Wasp and She-Hulk.

Super Smash Bros. Heroic Encounter DLC Trailer, My Thoughts

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the latest entry in the Smash Bros. franchise, can boast one of the biggest rosters in fighting games. Every character that has ever appeared in a Smash Bros. game returned for this game, including third-party characters like Cloud from Final Fantasy and Ryu from Street Fighter. The game boasts a roster numbering nearly 80 characters. And that was before it was announced more fighters would come thanks to DLC.

The first DLC character that was revealed was Joker from Persona 5, announced at the 2018 Game Awards. But since then, Nintendo has revealed at E3 2019 two more DLC characters, the first we'll look at here. This one made me smile, as this guy is representing a series that I felt Smash should have been able to give a shout-out to earlier, as his series was considered the first major console RPG series. Let's see who it is!

Boy, Sauron has some ugly relatives.

Link's a bit outnumbered, huh? He's fighting Meta Knight and Chrom, I think. And I also think Sauron's Ugly Brother over there has something to do with that.

Luckily, help is on the way! I hope...

Link's going to get wrecked!

BOOM!

Here comes the theme song! I know this theme!

Say hello to the Hero, everyone! He's also known as "The Luminary". He's the playable character in Dragon Quest XI, which is coming to the Switch later this year. Yup, the Dragon Quest series is coming to Smash! About time! I love the Dragon Quest series, so I was so happy it's getting representation in Smash! The series is considered incredibly important, as it's considered the very first console RPG series. Yeah. It was massively influential. Pokémon, Final Fantasy, likely they would have never existed if it weren't for Dragon Quest.

I love the stage. I'm guessing it's a reference to Dragon Quest XI, as that's the latest game in the series, and the Luminary is from that game.

The Luminary is going to be so much fun to play as!

Look out, slimes!

Looks like the Luminary is going to need some help.

We're also getting the heroes of Dragon Quest IV and VIII, too! Awesome! I'm betting they'll be alternate "colors" for the Luminary. I have the remake of IV for the DS and the remake of VIII for the 3DS. They're great games.

...Oh...my...God...ERDRICK! ERDRICK! ERDRICK OF THE FIRST THREE DRAGON QUEST GAMES! THIS IS SO COOL!

Oh, neat! They can use the magic spells from the games!

I love the Final Smash! The Heroes channel the power from the heroes of the other seven mainline Dragon Quest games. I recognize VI, VII, IX, and II. I'm guessing the other ones are from I and V.

About time, I say. It is about freakin' time. I know this was much more widely received in Japan, but the Dragon Quest games do have a following here in the West. I'm one of those fans. Dragon Quest is HUGE in Japan. I am not kidding. It is HUGE over there. They have a BAR in Japan based on the games. A BAR. I am not kidding, it is real. It's also got a ballet, and there was even an urban legend that the Japanese government passed a law banning Square Enix from releasing Dragon Quest games on weekdays because so many people left work or school to buy the new game when it came out. It wouldn't be until Dragon Quest VIII was released in 2005 that the West would truly embrace the series. VIII was also the first game in the series released in Europe.

I am so excited for this. I have been a fan of the Dragon Quest series for years, and Smash Bros. is my favorite fighting game. So seeing them together? This is incredible! I am so happy! This is great! This is so great!

Collection of Mana Trailer, My Thoughts

When it comes to RPG video games, Square-Enix is often considered second to none in the genre. After all, the company I known for producing two of the greatest RPG series of all time: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Both long-running critically-acclaimed series that made the video game RPG what it is today. However, there is a third series that is not quite as well known: The Mana series.

Created by Koichi Ishii, the Mana series [Known as Seiken Densetsu ("The Legend of the Sacred Sword") in Japan] started as a spin-off of the Final Fantasy series, but eventually went its own direction. The series (as of the original writing of this blog entry) has consisted of 12 games. Since 1991, the games have predominantly appeared on Nintendo and Sony consoles, but in recent years they have also been ported to mobile devices.

Well, Square-Enix has announced at E3 that a collection of three of the games from the Mana series is coming to the Nintendo Switch. Let's take a look at the trailer for Collection of Mana!

The three games are as follows:

Final Fantasy Adventure - The first game in the Mana series, it was released in 1991 for the Game Boy in Japan and North America, 1993 in Europe. Sunsoft would release it in North America in 1998. It would get a remake for the Game Boy Advance in 2003 as Sword of Mana. Join a hero named Sumo as he attempts to prevent the destruction of the world of Mana from the Dark Lord. Ishii drew inspiration from things like Alice in Wonderland and Lord of the Rings.

This game also had gameplay that differed from the main Final Fantasy series. Whereas those games had a turn-based battle system, this game would have a real-time system, kind of like Legend of Zelda. This game has been heavily praised since its release, and is considered one of the best games in the Game Boy library.

Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2 in Japan) - The second game in the Mana series, it was released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo in Japan and North America, and 1994 in Europe. It was given a full 3D remake for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Microsoft Windows in 2018. In this game, you play as a young boy who must help re-energize the magic Sword of Mana after accidentally unleashing monsters throughout the world of Mana.

This game incorporated multiplayer (each member of the three-person party could also be controlled by a human player), and it had a "Ring Command" system. This game would be highly praised for its visuals, music, story, and multiplayer. I think it's the most famous of the Mana series games, and it certainly helped RPG video games gain popularity in the West. I myself played this game before, on my Wii. It's a great game.

Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3 in Japan) - The third game in the Mana series, it was released in 1995 for the Super Famicom (The Japanese Super Nintendo). This collection is the first time the game was released in the West officially. You choose a party of three from six possible playable characters, each with their own unique plotlines. This game included a time progression system that allowed the time in the game to change from night to day, and changed the day of the week, and the characters had many choices of character classes.

In 2000, an unofficial fan translation was released. The game was greatly praised in Japan for its graphics and gameplay, but the story was given more mixed reception. The characters and plotlines were seen to be a bit one-dimensional, and only were interesting when they crossed over.

Yeah, there are only three games in this collection. However, at least they're not multiple versions of the same game like in the Contra Collection. From what I understand, these are three of the best games in the entire series, so I feel it is worth the money. If you like old video games, RPGs especially, it wouldn't hurt picking this up. I've really got to get an SD card for my Switch...

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you enjoyed it, spread it around! And if you want to give this blog some additional support...I'm working on that. See you next time!

Rambo: Last Blood Teaser, My Thoughts

In 1982, the film First Blood was released in American theaters. It was based on the 1972 novel of the same name by David Morrell. The film told the tale of John Rambo, a man (with a particular set of skills) dealing with the mental scars of his time in the Vietnam War who ends up in a war with the arrogant sheriff of a small town in the state of Washington.

The film did get mixed reception on release, but it was a box office smash. Over the years, First Blood has been reappraised as a classic, important to the development of the action genre. The film would spawn a franchise. It got three sequels, an animated series (Since it was the 80s, it also got a tie-in toy line), comic books, novels, video games, novels, the works.

There was intended to be a fifth film called Rambo: Last Stand, but it got cancelled in 2016 when Sylvester Stallone (who played Rambo and co-wrote all the films) decided to retire from the role. However, it appears Mr. Stallone as changed his mind and decided to don the headband and pick up the bow and explosive arrows one more time. Let's take a look at the teaser for Rambo: Last Blood!

Eh, not the first time Rambo got in a big fight on US soil.

Well, it's nice to see that John got himself a nice little farm. Where he can raise his chickens and pigs and grow stuff in peace. ...who's going to ruin this for him? And how brutally will they die?

I just had this hilarious mental image of an old Rambo sitting in his rocking chair screaming "NOTHING IS OVER" at the clouds as they pass by.

Huh, I wonder who died?

Man, "Old Town Road" is EVERYWHERE, ain't it? I can see why, it's a good song.

Poor John just looks so freakin' tired. Take a nap, dude.

From what I understand, ol' Johnny is going to visit Mexico to rescue a friend's daughter from the cartel. I'm guessing ol' Sly Stallone watched Narcos on Netflix.

I'm getting the vibe that this movie is trying to go back to Rambo's roots, as it were. Seeing him set the traps, the combat, the making his own weaponry, it all has a First Blood vibe. I can see why they'd want to go that direction. The series did get crazier as it went on.

That's a lot of explosions.

Well, I have to admit, I haven't thought much about this movie since seeing the trailer. I did see bits of First Blood here and there, and I have enjoyed it alright. This looks like just one of those films where you can just sit back, turn off your brain, and enjoy. I may give this a watch.

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you enjoyed it, please spread it around. And I have to look into further options for further supporting this blog. Still, thank you all for the continued support! See you next time!

Captain America #357 (Early September 1989)

It's July, so it's the perfect month to talk about one Star-Spangled Man with a Plan. That's right, we're taking a look at a Captain America adventure. This comic started what I consider a rather underrated story from one of the more underrated runs of Cap's book: The Bloodstone Hunt.

To me, Mark Gruenwald should be hailed as one of the great Cap writers, alongside Mark Waid and Ed Brubaker. His run (alongside the MCU movies), made Cap one of my favorite characters. Gruenwald's years with the comic was a time that I don't think is talked about very much. It's a shame, as I think it's a great run for the First Avenger. So, I thought I'd highlight some of it a bit. Also, I wanted to talk about a storyline that I consider rather underrated: The Bloodstone Hunt. So with that, let's look at Captain America #357!

This cover is really neat Kieron Dwyer piece. You got Baron Zemo holding up a piece of a skeleton in triumph, and his three lackeys looking on in shock, like they just realized that Zemo has gone crazy. I also like how the Captain America masthead is incorporated into the logo for the storyline. Also, in the corer, there appeared to be a deaged Captain America cowering from some hands. I also have to give love to the corner logo. You got a masked woman staring at Cap adoringly with a broken heart above her. I find it very amusing when comics have fun with cover logos, as I said with my reviews of The' Nam #52 and #53.

"The Bloodstone Hunt: Prologue"
Writer: Mark Gruenwald
Penciler: Kieron Dwyer
Inker: Al Milgrom
Colorist: Gregory Wright
Letterer: Jack Morelli
Editor: Ralph Macchio
Editor-in-Chief: Tom DeFalco

The story begins with a prologue. The time: Nighttime. The place? The American Museum of Natural History in New York City. A trio of men have broken into the museum, in search of something. They find their quarry in a crate. They grab the crate and get ready to leave, but a night watchman discovers them. Who are these three men?

Meet Batroc's Brigade! From left to right: Machete (Ferdinand Lopez), Batroc the Leaper, and Zaran. Zaran and Machete injure the night watchman with their blades, but Batroc refuses to let them finish him off. Machete reminds Batroc that the watchman will be able to identify them. He'll be able to identify you, Machete. Zaran and Batroc wear masks. Besides, Batroc loves the spotlight.

The three mercs load the crate into a waiting truck, who has a mysterious person riding on top of it. The truck heads to a funeral home in uptown New York City. The three mercenaries take the crate to Baron Helmut Zemo, who demands it be opened. What's in the crate?

The skeletal remains of the legendary immortal monster hunter and adventurer Ulysses Bloodstone. First appearing in Marvel Presents #1 (October 1975), Bloodstone was created by Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, and John Warner. He was a short-lived character, being killed off not very long after he was created. He's more known these days for being the father of Elsa and Cullen Bloodstone. Zemo also has another man in his hire.

Meet Tristram Micawber, psychic detective. Basically, he has psychic powers and uses them to solve crimes. I can imagine in the Marvel Universe, that's a legit career path for certain people. Micawber has the power of psychometry. He touches something, and he can psychically learn about it. In the real world, there's no scientific evidence of psychometry existing. But in the Marvel Universe...it can be a legit superpower. Just ask Longshot of the X-Men.

This is a clever way to recap who Ulysses Bloodstone was as well as recap the few adventures the comics revealed at the time. 20,000 years ago, Bloodstone was a caveman. A caveman with a particular talent for hunting wooly mammoths. One night, a meteorite fell from the sky and crashed into the Earth. The future Bloodstone investigated and discovered the meteorite was actually a spaceship.

The alien occupant had a large red gemstone, the future namesake of the caveman. The alien and the caveman fought, the fight resulting in the gem shattering. The explosion killed the caveman's tribe, but Bloodstone himself survived. A piece of the gem got embedded in his sternum. Over time, the caveman would discover the gem in his chest would grant him superhuman physical abilities, certain psychic abilities...and would make him...immortal. Cue the Queen!

Over the centuries, Ulysses Bloodstone would live many lives, slaying many monsters. A few years before the events of this comic, occurred the events of Rampaging Hulk #8 (April 1978). Bloodstone was captured by a group known only as the Conspiracy. Not much of a name, I know. An insane surgeon who was part of the group removed the stone from the monster hunter's chest. This would result in the creation of a crystal monster. Bloodstone would stop the monster, but then collapsed and died of extreme old age.

After the events of that story, the police took his remains into custody and turned them over to the museum. After all, Bloodstone was an example of early man. As for the gem pieces...they vanished to the four corners of the Earth. Micawber believes he can find them. As such, Baron Zemo offers the three mercenaries a choice, either each accept $10,000 for the skeleton retrieval...or get $100,000 for every piece of the Bloodstone that they help him recover. Being mercenaries, they go for the option that'll net them the most cold hard cash.

Zaran notices someone watching them, and tosses a pair of daggers at them.

Say hello to Rachel Leighton, aka Diamondback. At the time, she had a bit of a thing for Captain America, and would help him out on adventures. Leighton tries to flee him, but is ambushed by Batroc the Leaper. Micawber reveals with his psychometric powers that she had followed them, likely to steal the Bloodstone shards from them, likely to give to the other members of the Serpent Society.

There is something Zemo has to do before they deal with Diamondback. Using Machete's namesake weapon, he removes a part of Ulysses Bloodstone's ribcage, where his chest stone was in life. Micawber is able to use the bone as a divining rod to find five Bloodstone fragments, presumably the parts of the bloodstone in his chest.

With that, there's still Rachel Leighton to get rid of. They dump her in the box with the rest of Ulysses Bloodstone's remains, nail the box shut, and dump it into a pit.

This story is pretty good. It's basically a bit of setup, but I enjoyed it. I do have to admit something, though. Like with my review of Captain America #400, this was only part of the comic. When I look at comics for this blog, more often than not, I use trades. And sometimes, trades do not collect complete issues. The trade I used was the 2010 trade paperback Captain America: The Bloodstone Hunt. It only collected the story that was relevant to the storyline. I get why they did that, but a part of me is annoyed by it a little bit. The main story focused on Captain America battling a group called the Sisters of Sin. I would have liked it to be included for the sake of completeness.

As such, I don't have a lot to say. This is a good setup, though. I do like that we get a recap of who Ulysses Bloodstone was, as he likely even back then was not a well-known character, and it sets up his posthumous importance to this story. I wish I could have also reviewed the main story. But I did enjoy what I had to work with. It set up an exciting adventure, and we got a little bit of action.

I highly recommend tracking down the trade that collects this story. Bloodstone Hunt is a great story that has an old-school adventure vibe to it. If you like superheroes and Indiana Jones, this storyline is for you. Maybe I will look at the next issue in the future. You HAVE to read this storyline! It is criminally underrated in my opinion.

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you liked it, spread it around! And I'm hoping to find a new way for all of you to provide further support for this blog in the future. I want to look at the next issue of this storyline in the future, but first, we have some monthly business in Battleworld to return to. So join me next time when the Secret Wars rage on...

Dr. Mario World Launch Trailer, My Thoughts

In 1990, Nintendo released a puzzle game for the NES and Game Boy called Dr. Mario. In it, Nintendo's mascot Mario takes up the medical business. He is a doctor who must destroy viruses with special capsules. Basically, you match the colors, you destroy the virus.

The game would be highly praised, and spawn a small series of games of its own. Dr. Mario would also be a playable fighter in the Smash Bros. series. And now a new game has come in the series...in the form of a mobile game.

Yup, in recent years, Nintendo finally decided to take the plunge into games for phones and tablets. Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, and Pokémon are three Nintendo series that have mobile spin-offs. And now Dr. Mario is getting a mobile game: Dr. Mario World. Let's look at the launch trailer!

I love the remix of the theme.

The gameplay of Dr. Mario is simple, but it's what makes the game so fun and addicting. Just match the capsule colors with the viruses, and clear out the viruses. Easy, but challenging. I think I played this game many years ago, I don't remember.

Heh, that stage with the bombs. Sometimes, you have to go scorched earth on the viruses.

I like the addition of new items like the Rainbow Capsule and Koopa Shell. Enhances the gameplay and makes you strategize more.

Ohhh, I get the feeling players are going to HATE the teleporting viruses.

Heh heh, there's a Dr. Bowser. I wonder how many malpractice suits he's been hit with.

I like that you can unlock doctors with special attacks. Find the one that fits your playstyle!

Well, this game looks like it will be tons of fun! I loved Tetris as a kid, so this seems right up my alley. I wonder why I never really played these games before. Well, now's a good time to start!

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you enjoyed it, spread it around! And if you want to give this blog some additional support...I'm still working on that. See you next time!
