The heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe have appeared in a variety of video games over the years. Platformers, beat 'em ups, RPGs, and fighting games. And speaking of fighting games, it has come to my attention that a new game set in the mighty Marvel Universe is in the works: Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.
Tokon is being developed by Japanese game-makers Arc System Works and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. ASW are veterans of fighting games, being the creators of the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue fighting game series. They also ported Double Dragon to the Sega Master System in 1988. yeah, they've been around a lot longer than you think. This game came about due to the success of the Spider-Man games on PS5. SIE was interested in collaborating with Marvel Games again as a result, this time on something a little different: a first-party fighting game. The goal with this game was to create a game like Super Smash Brothers: simple and welcoming to newcomers to the genre, while also providing lots of depth that would make competitive gaming fun. Let's look at the trailer!
It's a shame that this game will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. But there is a reason for it. It is being published by Sony, after all. And exclusives do sell consoles.
And of course, Captain America and Iron Man are at it again. The Civil War never truly ended. 😒
I love that the Iron Man armor is homaging the Gundam franchise. You know, I can imagine Tony being a massive mecha anime nerd. I can see him fiddling about with Gunpla models and the like.
And hey, Kamala Khan! She's become a personal favorite character of mine, so it's always nice to see her in things.
And of course, you can't have a Marvel game without Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man. I think him facing Kamala here is a nice bit of symbolism. He was Marvel's original teenage superhero sensation. And Kamala has arguably one of the more successful attempts at recapturing the lightning in the bottle that was Peter in the past: A relatable young person who has the heart of a hero.
I like that the trailer shows off some of the tag team gameplay.
Oooh, getting slammed into cars like that has got to hurt!
And of course, Star-Lord shows up! Gotta give a shout-out to Marvel's cosmic side. Like that the roster is doing that.
And hey, the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider! I will always respect and give kudos to a Marvel game that includes lesser-known characters in its roster.
Doctor Doom! Hey, if you have a Marvel game that has Spider-Man, one of Marvel's most iconic heroes, it makes sense you'd include one of Marvel's most iconic villains.
Storm is an unsurprising choice. She's one of the most iconic and famous members of the X-Men, outside of James "Logan" Howlett, the original Wolverine, himself. Not to mention her weather powers could allow some cool things to be dons in this game.
The 4-on-4 team mechanic is a unique one, I think. I admit, I'm not well-versed on fighting games, so don't take my word for it. Imagine four Marvel characters beating you down at once. You're going to be left in a lot of pain.
I also had noticed that the backdrop of these fights is New York City. Makes sense, the Big Apple is the center of the Marvel Universe. I did see a couple of Easter eggs: the theater promoting a Dazzler show, and the theater itself being the Gem Theater from the Power Man and Iron Fist series. There was also a statue of the founding Avengers (at least the Big Three of the group: Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor), a Damage Control truck, Foswell's Gym from the Daredevil comics, and the hanging scales could indicate the law offices of Murdock and Nelson, again from Daredevil. I love little nods like that.
I think we just got previews of these guys' super moves. I love that Iron Man's uses the Hulkbuster armor.
I think this game looks like it will be a ton of fun. I'm a big Marvel head, and even though I'm honestly more of a fan of platformers, shooters, and RPGs than fighting games, I think I'll give this game a try...if I have a PS5. May finally have an excuse to get one. Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you liked it, show it off! Take care of yourselves and each other! See you next time!
