Super Smash Bros. Switch Teaser Trailer, My Thoughts

Super Smash Bros. One of Nintendo's most beloved and successful franchises, this epic crossover fighting game has been an important part of every Nintendo console's library since the days of the Nintendo 64. Not to mention the 3DS got to be the first handheld to get a Smash game. The Switch is no exception. And with their latest Direct, Nintendo revealed this trailer for a Switch Smash! Let's take a look at it!

The trailer begins with some paint being splatted on the ground in an area of pure white. Something's moving through the paint...it's Orange Inkling Girl! I'm guessing the inklings will be playable fighters in this new Smash game. That does make sense, Splatoon's sequel is on the Switch, and it has become a quite successful little franchise. The Inklings are just having some fun doing what they do best: trying to blast each other with paint.

PAINT GRENADE!

Everything's getting dark. The Inklings forgot to pay the power bill again, huh? Orange Inkling Girl notices something big and bright in the distance.

And we got a big flaming Smash logo.

That's got to be Breath of the Wild Link. That is the newest Zelda game. I have heard some speculation that this was a port of the Wii U/3DS version, but Link here makes me doubt it. If it was, that Link would be wearing a hat. Breath of the Wild Link's default appearance is hatless.

I do hope all the characters in the last one come to this game. I also hope that Solid Snake and the Ice Climbers come back. I also would like to see Shantae, Shovel Knight, Chun Li, and Simon Belmont join the roster as well. I love playing the last Smash on my 3DS, so Smash on Switch! I am all for it!

Text Play: Pokemon Mega Adventure #2

Welcome to my second Text Play entry on Pokémon Mega Adventure!

Last time, I started the game, got a ton of Pokémon (including all three Alola starters), and prepared to fight the first Gym Leader. At this point, I do want to mention the couple of things. One, I've been enjoying the game so far, but I do have to point out that it does glitch up. Nothing terrible, just when you walk, the Pokémon behind you can get a bit weird, location-wise. Another is a feature that I think is pretty cool. If you talk to your Pokémon on occasion, they can do this for you.

Pretty neat, huh? Back in the day, some Pokémon would have the Ability called "Pickup". This ability allowed Pokémon to find and give you items if you talked to them on occasion on the overworld. Here, it seems that any Pokémon that follows you has this ability. I noticed this with several Pokémon I had following me. And I don't think any of them had the "Pickup" Ability. I know Biollantus doesn't. Biollantus gave me a Nugget in that picture. I love this feature, as it encourages the player to talk to their Pokémon more often. And also, the items you can get are pretty cool. I think I got a free Potion, I know I got a Apricorn (don't remember the color), a Blue Apricorn, and a Nugget. That can be sold for quite a bit of money. Thanks, Biollantus!

I also like that your current team is shown on the top of the screen. The creators of the game seemed to keep Let's Players in mind when they made this game.

I did some exploring of Kagawa City, and it's a nice-looking place. It seems to be more of a small town than a city, though. But there are a couple of things I wanted to point out. One is this.

It's an apartment building. Nice-looking one, too. But there was another place in this city that I noticed.

Meet the mysterious warehouse. The guard there gets a bit surly when you talk to him. I can't help but wonder what is in that warehouse? I couldn't find a way to sneak inside, but I get the feeling that it may play a bigger role in the future.

Well, time to take on the Kagawa Gym leader, Kaneki. Honestly, I felt lazy when it came to doing some grinding up my Rowlet and Popplio, so I decided to just do it and get it over with. Worst case scenario, I'd lose and can try again.

Kaneki's appearance isn't...quite what I'd expect from a Gym Leader who specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. Honestly, I'd expect a Rock-type specialist to look more...rugged. Like they were one with the land. This guy looks like he barely spent any time outside.

Biollantus was a big help here, especially his Leech Seed attack. It helped it wear down and power through Kaneki's Roggenrola. His Onix managed to beat Biollantus (Rock Tomb brought the pain), but Misty the Azurill's Water Gun was able to finish it off. Luckily, Biollantus managed to plant Leech Seed on the Onix, and Vine Whip did plenty of damage.

I got the Boulder Badge for defeating Kaneki. This Badge allows Pokémon to use Cut outside of battle. I also got TM39 (Rock Tomb). Yeah, I get the feeling this game started out as a fan remake of Red and Blue. The Boulder Badge and TM39 are the same prizes you get for beating Brock in FireRed and LeafGreen.

After leaving the Gym, I encountered Serena, who I think is the same one from Pokémon X and Y. I have encountered her before, but I'm afraid I don't remember when. She wants to take me on right now. At the very least, she heals my Pokémon up for me. Alright, let's do this.

She started with Squirtle, but Biollantus the Bulbasaur dealt with it quick thanks to the Leech Seed/Vine Whip combo. She then brought in Pidove, so I brought out Slate the Geodude to counter him. Her final Pokémon was a Sewaddle. It was only level 5 (I bet she only caught that recently), Betty the Butterfree dispatched it with a couple blasts of Confusion.

I got a free Exp. Share from it. This'll be a big help in grinding up Pokémon to take on future Gym Leaders. I do wish it was more like the Exp. Share in Sun and Moon, though. Maybe I can get it upgraded at some point. Sun and Moon's Exp Share really helps with the grinding.

I decided to explore Route 3 a bit. Caught some Pokémon, and found this house.

The woman inside asks me if I'm Brendan's friend. Evidently Brendan is another kid going on a Pokémon adventure like I am. He must be out getting ready for it, because he left his Pokémon and Pokédex behind.

It's odd, as no trainer worth their salt would ever leave their Pokémon behind like this. Maybe we'll actually meet in the future. According to the old lady wandering nearby, he's supposed to be the Hoenn Champion. Hoo boy, I bet he'll be a powerhouse. Route 3 is a bit of a coastal area, ending with this ship. That reminds me, I've got to get back to playing Omega Ruby sometime.

I wonder if we'll get to explore that at some point, like the warehouse in Kagawa City.

Explored Route 4 a bit. Found a couple of Berry trees, got some Chesto and Cheri Berries.I am hoping at some point we get some Berry Pots, because I've always found the berry patches a bit inconvenient. Last time, I learned there was a guy named Kurt who made Apricorns into Pokéballs. I found his house.

And his house has several berry patches in front of it. Well, that's nice. Maybe when I get some kind of watering can, I can come here and plant some Berries.

Route 4 is a short route, leading directly to Anomi City. However, Anomi's Gym was closed up. Turns out that the leader passed away a couple years ago, and the Gym was shut down ever since. Okay...wait a second, if the Gym leader passed away, wouldn't the Region's Pokémon League have plans for this? Wouldn't they have made sure to get someone to run the Gym? I mean, Gyms usually have a bunch of trainers before you face the leaders, couldn't one of them handle it in this situation? Seriously!

Next time, I think we'll explore the Anomi City some more, and maybe file some complaints to this Region's Pokémon League about the lack of a Gym Leader here after two years...

Pokémon Obtained:

Route 4 Pokémon. Caught a Mankey, named him Ambrose. I think it's a good name for a Pokémon that can be a...bit nuts. Caught a Dwebble, named him Rocky. Thinking up nicknames for Pokémon is hard sometimes. But Dwebble is cute.  I also managed to catch an Abra with an Ultra Ball, and named him Einstein. Caught a Snubbull, named her Bulla. Caught a Croagunk, named her Weying.

Route 3 Pokémon. Caught an Aipom, named him Louie. Caught a Taillow, named her Swift. Caught a male Nidoran, named him Romeo. Caught a female Nidoran and named her Juilet, of course.

Christopher Robin Teaser, My Thoughts

Walt Disney Pictures has just released a teaser trailer for a surprising new film: Christopher Robin. Yes, Christopher Robin from the Winnie the Pooh franchise. Now, like many people of a certain generation, I remember growing up with Winnie the Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. I particularly remember watching The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh way back in the day. I even had a cat named Tigger. Sadly, he's passed on. So yeah, Pooh and the gang were a part of my life. So, this trailer had me curious.

The trailer begins with a view of London in what I think is in the 1950s. We then focus on a building housing a company called "Winslow Enterprises". I wanted to make a joke about the Toyman, but his first name was Winslow, not his last. Nuts. Working for the Toyman would be...interesting.

Ewan MacGregor is the man taking up the role of the former young imaginative boy, and it appears he's having some troubles. His boss looks to be a bit of a Scrooge. And not the awesome Scrooge. You know, the duck one.

Hey, it's Hayley Atwell. Nice to see that Peggy Carter moved on after Steve Rogers's seeming death.

You have no idea how much it made me smile to hear Jim Cummings voicing Pooh again. He voiced him in the cartoons back in the day. I also love Pooh's design, making him look like  mix of the Disney design and the stuffed animals that originally inspired A.A. Milne to create the Pooh gang.

This film seems like it will be an enjoyable watch. I'll give it a looksee when it comes out in August.

Namor the Sub-Mariner #1 (April 1990)

Namor McKenzie, the Sub-Mariner. In the Marvel Universe, Namor is the king of the underwater kingdom known as Atlantis. He is also comics' first anti-hero. He also was one of the centers of comics' first crossovers, where he battled the original Human Torch, the android Jim Hammond. Created by the late writer/artist Bill Everett, he first appeared in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly (April 1939), which was intended to be a little promotional comic given away in movie theaters. When that giveaway idea fell through, the character would next appear in Marvel Comics #1 (October 1939), which also debuted the original Human Torch.

The character has been in the role of both hero and villain over the decades, being mainly associated with the Fantastic Four [The character was revived in Fantastic Four #4 (May 1962)]. He's been both ally and enemy to them, and also is known for carrying a bit of a torch for Sue Storm-Richards, the Invisible Woman. But the FF are not the only team he's hung with. He's battled and been a member of the Avengers, and also in the Defenders. In WWII, he allied himself with Captain America, Bucky, and the original Human Torch to become the Invaders. In recent years, he's been more closely associated with the X-Men, taking advantage of an old nickname for him "Marvel's First Mutant". This is true in print, but in-universe, there are several mutants who predate him, including Wolverine. I am not kidding.

In 1990, he got his own series again, which lasted for 62 issues. The final one was published in 1995. The first issue of it is what we're going to look at here. So, with that out of the way, let's take a look at Namor #1!

The cover is well-drawn, if a bit basic. It's Namor flying out of the water, screaming in rage about something. That's Namor in a nutshell, guy who lives in water and gets mad about stuff. Doesn't take much.

"Purpose!"
Writer: John Byrne
Artist: John Byrne
Inker: Bob Wiacek
Colorist: Glynis Oliver
Letterer: Glen Lopez
Editor: Terry Kavanagh
Editor-In-Chief: Tom DeFalco

The story begins with a ship on the waters of the South Pacific. One of the boat's occupants remarks that there is nothing wrong with the equipment on board, so the blip the radar picked up had to be real. It's a fast-moving one, too. Nothing natural could move that quickly.

The young woman, Carrie Alexander, suggests that maybe it's some kind of Navy secret weapon test. The old man, Caleb Alexander, is not surprised. But then the blip turns ninety degrees, and it's heading straight up. A man bursts out of the water, revealing that he is Namor. The Sub-Mariner is clearly enraged about something. Both Caleb and Carrie are shocked by this, as Namor was believed to be dead. It was believed he was killed during the 1989 crossover Atlantis Attacks! during a battle with Iron Man and the forces of Attuma. Reports of his death have clearly been exaggerated.

The Alexanders pursue him on his boat and track him to an island. Namor is having trouble keeping his thoughts straight, and his head is killing him. Man, that Atlantean ale must have some kick if it can give Namor a hangover. He hears voices and finds a bunch of stereotypical natives worshipping an idol that looks like an airplane.

Namor gets mad because...well, he just gets mad. One of the natives spots him, and another tosses a spear at the King of Atlantis. Naturally, it only bounces off him. Namor loses it and wrecks the idol. He also decides to make like Braun Strowman and give the stereotypical tribe his hands.

Funny enough, this is similar to the revival of the Steve Rogers Captain America in the 1960s. No joke. Namor found a bunch of natives worshipping an idol that turned out to be a frozen Captain America. Being Namor, he lost his marbles, gave the tribe his hands, and threw Cap into the ocean, unaware of who it was. And they fought in WWII together as Invaders. Namor's temper is not very smart.

Carrie approaches Namor nervously, but Namor is clearly not well. Instead of Carrie, he sees Lady Dorma, then Marrina, both women who were part of Namor's life...and he had lost. However, Carrie doesn't understand him as he is speaking Atlantean. Caleb only knows a few words of it. Namor is rather disoriented, and Caleb thinks a theory he has about Namor's rage problem may have something to do with it. Caleb is able to convince the monarch to come aboard his ship, the Oracle. Later, Namor is resting, hooked up to an IV and an odd machine.

It has been an hour, but Namor is feeling much better. Namor admits he's unaware of the complete nature of the blood recycler he is hooked up to. Caleb says he will explain it...after he decides to recount Namor's origins. The year is 1920. On the seas near the South Pole, there was an icebreaker named the Oracle. It's captain? One Leonard McKenzie. The ship was dropping depth charges to break the ice around it. Unaware to the ship's crew, their charges were damaging the hidden city of Atlantis. In response, King Thakorr sent his daughter, Princess Fen, to lead a scouting party to check it out. Evidently the King didn't have anyone else in his army available to command the scouting party.

However, Fen, being the adventurous sort, basically said to the party: "I got this, go enjoy some Atlantean Ale at the tavern on me". Imbibing a special potion that would allow her to breathe in the air for five hours at a time, she climbs up to the ship and gets caught. Despite Atlanteans, or Homo mermanus as they have been called by the science set being physically stronger than normal humans thanks to their bodies being adapted to the pressures of the ocean, Fen is able to be held down and taken to Captain McKenzie.

When McKenzie and Fen's eyes meet, they are smitten. Fen spends some time with the handsome captain that has so captured her interest. Eventually, Captain McKenzie asks for Fen's hand in marriage and Fen eagerly agrees. They married on the Oracle, but it would sadly last long. King Thakorr would send a party to retrieve his daughter, and McKenzie was seemingly killed in the process. You'd think it would have occurred to Fen to actually return to Atlantis and basically say to her dad, "Yeah, I just found out what was going on. They had no idea we were down here, and they're very sorry about the depth charges. They're actually quite nice, and their captain is handsome." That would have saved a LOT of grief.

But not all was lost. Before his death, McKenzie and Fen did conceive a child: one Namor McKenzie, the Avenging Son. That's what "Namor" means in Atlantean.

Aww, isn't baby Namor cute? He's going to grow up into a great little walking rage problem. Namor confirms this as the account of his birth he gave to the United Nations in Fantastic Four Annual #1 (1963). Caleb explains that Namor is the reason he became a marine biologist. Namor was a special study for him. He believes that because of Namor's hybrid human/Atlantean physiology, his body chemistry is a bit messed up. If he's underwater or on the surface for too long, he starts to suffer from oxygen deprivation, which causes him to go crazy.

This retcon is an attempt to explain Namor's craziness when it came to his characterization over the years. Honestly, I do like the retcon, although I do think that Namor having rage issues shouldn't be completely discounted. I can't see why it can't be a bit of both. Namor can still have issues with his temper, it can be just his physiology doesn't help things.

Despite this, Namor is clearly grateful for the help, and is curious as to why Caleb would be so interested in him. Caleb explains that during WWII, he was a kid living in Harlem. He loved comics, as they gave him an escape from his dreary life. One day, he saw a special celebration the Mayor of New York (who would likely be Fiorello H. La Guardia at the time) was giving for the Invaders (Captain America, Human Torch, Toro, and Namor). When the young Caleb saw Namor fly off, he pursued him on his bicycle. The boy didn't pay attention, and ended up careening off a dock and into the water. He was unable to swim away, as a trouser cuff got caught in the bike chain and was dragging him under. He remembers the dock workers looking down and not helping him. Yeah, remember this. This was the 1940s, and Caleb was black. Luckily, young Caleb did have a savior.

Caleb doesn't expect Namor to remember it, as it was nearly fifty years ago (topical to 1990). Namor admits he is prone to memory failure. Caleb explains after Namor rescued him, he sold his bike and bought a book on marine biology. It was the proudest day of his grandfather's life. Carrie Alexander is following in her father's footsteps, as he's got a bad heart and can't dive anymore. Caleb asks Namor what he wants to do, as Caleb's discovery may have given him a new lease on life, and the world thinks he's dead. Namor admits he has much to think about.

Some time later, Carrie is sitting on the deck of her and Caleb's boat, when Namor bursts out of the water, carrying an object crusted over with sea grime and rust. The former King of Atlantis wishes to show her something.

Behold! TREASURE! Carrie is amazed, as this treasure could be worth millions. Namor explains that he found it in the wreck of an old Spanish brigantine that sunk a few miles nearby about 300 years ago. The Atlanteans have known of many such wrecks with treasures, and Namor himself has used them to fund certain...projects in the past. And he's going to do so again with this treasure.

Namor has done a lot of thinking, and he's come to a conclusion: Humanity has treated the world as if it was a vast disposable resource. It isn't. The Earth is a fragile little planet, and one day, humanity in its ignorance and greed, could end up damaging it in a way that could never be fixed. He believes that perhaps that could be prevented. He has a plan, and he needs the Alexander's help so he can maintain the idea that he is dead. That, and he has found Carrie Alexander quite an attractive woman.

Somewhere else, a woman is walking by, being greeted by people. One man, Gerrold, asks how her trip to Hong Kong was. She didn't have a great trip, and is all too eager to see China take the territory back from Great Britain (This was 1990, so the UK wouldn't return Hong Kong to China for another 7 years). She also notices a man leering at her and tells Gerrold if she catches him doing it again, he's going back to the mailroom. She takes an elevator to her brother's apartments. She asks him where he is, and the butler tells her he is in the Gun Room. She heads in and sees him...

Yup. Her brother is planning to put a bullet in his head. She is able to stop him. Desmond Marrs is feeling despondent. He feels his existence is inconsequential and boring. The woman, Phoebe Marrs, tries to convince her brother that his existence matters. He's one of the six richest men in the world. Desmond explains he feels like Alexander the Great at the peak of his conquest. There are no worlds left for him to conquer. Phoebe tries to perk him up by telling him about the old Parallel Conglomerate. Someone paid ten billion dollars for it.

Desmond is confused by this, as he felt the Conglomerate was worthless. Phoebe explains that a father-daughter team bought it, but everyone believes they're a front for a mystery man behind the scenes. Desmond seems to perk up at this. A new challenge for him, a new world to conquer. The story ends with him asking about the company that purchased it. Phoebe explains that the company's name is Oracle, Inc....

This issue was perfectly fine and enjoyable. I felt it did do some of the things a first issue should do: establish the new status quo, Namor got a couple of new supporting characters, we got a couple plotlines going with his forming a new company and his possible romance with Carrie. Not to mention we got a threat in the future in the form of the Marrs twins (yes, Desmond and Phoebe Marrs are fraternal twins). Some may not like the recount of Namor's origins, but I didn't mind it. Namor is not one of Marvel's famous characters, despite his being one of Marvel's oldest.

The whole environmentalism angle may seem strange, but to me, it does make an odd sort of sense. Namor is from an underwater kingdom, and Atlantis probably would be affected hard by environmental damage. I can imagine that Atlantis is far ahead with environmentally-friendly technology. I think it's a great angle for Namor, and one that would make him stand out from other superheroes. And I have no real complaints about John Byrne's artwork.

Next time, we join Namor's fellow Invader, Captain America, as he celebrates an anniversary in the middle of a Galactic Storm...

Incredibles 2 Teaser, My Thoughts

Back in 2004, Pixar released a fun little film focusing on a family of superheroes. It was called The Incredibles. And now, they are returning to the big screen! Here's the new teaser!

So, it's following up right after the end of the first Incredibles. Makes sense. I love that the villain is called "The Underminer". Heh heh, Mr. Incredible got sucked up.

Evidently, the Incredible family's big battle against Syndrome didn't lead to a miraculous rebirth of superheroes. That does make a ton of sense, actually. It sounds like this film will understandably be set not long after the events of the first one.

A tycoon wants to bring back superheroes, huh? I'm guessing he's the villain. And it looks like Mrs. Incredible is going to be the face of this "Rebirth". It is funny to see Mr. Incredible be the house husband.

Poor Mr. Incredible. I had trouble helping with homework, too. And that bit with Jack Jack monstering out and biting him made me laugh so much. I imagine that Reed and Sue Richards had similar problems with baby Franklin.

This film is going to be a ton of fun. I can't wait for it!

Detective Pikachu Trailer, My Thoughts

Over the last 20 years, the Pokémon franchise has expanded in various ways beyond the main series games. From a trading card game to Pokémon Pinball, Game Freak has experimented with their big cash cow franchise a lot. And here is the newest spin-off, Detective Pikachu!

The trailer begins with a look at a town that looks somewhat...rough.

A voice states that Pikachu has lost his memory and humans cannot be trusted. I'm guessing this game's story is going to take some twists and turns.

Hey, Mewtwo.

I gotta admit, I like the voice they got for Pikachu here, although considering this Pikachu is wearing a deerstalker, they should have given him an upper-class English accent.

So, we have to help a boy named Tim find his dad. Alright, sounds like a good mystery idea for kids. This game is most likely going to be made for kids.

Hey, a TV studio! Maybe Tim and Pikachu will appear on a talk show.

Was...was that Brock Lesnar? Brock Lesnar is in a Pokémon game. Is Suplex City a real place in the Pokémon universe?

I do think it's neat that both humans and Pokémon can give out clues that can help solve mysteries.

This looks like a neat little game. I'll give it a try.

Movie Review: Black Panther (2018)

The Mighty Marvel Cinematic Universe marches on! We travel to the Afrofuturistic African wonderland known as Wakanda as we focus on the man the comics have called the King of the Dead, the Black Panther! After the events of Captain America: Civil War, T'Challa has to deal with his formally taking the throne of Wakanda. However, there's a new threat coming in the form of Erik Killmonger, an American mercenary with a desire to burn the world. Can our hero stop this madman and save his home, and the world? And was it awesome in the process? Let's find out!

There was a desire to bring the character to film for a very long time, with Wesley Snipes desiring the title role back in 1992. However, in recent years, with the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios was able to bring Wakanda to life, under the director (and co-writer) Ryan Coogler, who had gotten praise for his work on the films Fruitvale Station and Creed. Man, I really want to see Creed.

I love the general look of Wakanda. I would be shocked if the crew, including production designer Hannah Beachler and costume designer Ruth E. Carter, don't get nominated for Oscars. The appearance of Wakanda pays homage to various African cultures. The costuming is beautiful.

I enjoyed watching Chadwick Boseman as the Panther himself, but to be honest...I do think his supporting cast did kind of outshine him a bit. Like Letitia Wright as Shuri. She provided some of the best laughs in the movie. Winston Duke's M'Baku was also a lot of fun. I liked how they handled some of his...more problematic aspects. Danai Gurira as Okoye was also fun to watch. Okoye was so awesome. I also liked Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia, as her character had a lot of heart. This was an amazing cast, especially the women. The women in Wakanda are given their due in this movie. The Dora Milaje are the coolest Secret Service on the planet.

One of the strongest parts of the film was...the villain. Yeah. Michael B. Jordan had been wanting to play one for a while, and you can tell he was just having fun playing Killmonger. His Killmonger is actually more similar to the comics than one would think, but this version is more of a tragic monster. His motivations are understandable, despite his heartlessness. The MCU movies have been criticized for having weak villains (in my opinion, I think it's because most villains don't get to stick around very long, hurting any ability they have to grow), but Killmonger seems to be the MCU being aware of that and trying to improve on this.

I can't really talk too much in depth about the story because I don't want to spoil anything. However, the film does deal with the issues of what Wakanda should do with the advanced technology in its hands, with both Panther and Killmonger having understandable points.

I have no real complaints about this film. It was fun from beginning to end. If you have not seen it, go and do so as soon as you can. It has earned every bit of praise it's got.
