It has all led to this. In 2008, in an after-credits scene in the first Iron Man movie, Nick Fury got fans going nuts with the idea of the Avengers, Earth's Mightiest Heroes, all together on film for the first time. In 2012, The Avengers hit theaters, to massive critical and commercial acclaim. In that film, a mid-credits scene revealed that there were bigger plans in the future for the MCU. Thanos was coming. He would overshadow the MCU continued to grow with more films. And now...he's finally arrived. And he promises destruction and death in his wake. This film was one of the most hyped-about films in the MCU, if not film history in general. So, did it live up to the hype? Let's find out!
The Avengers, fractured after the events of Captain America: Civil War, have a new problem on their hands. An interstellar genocidal maniac called Thanos is coming to Earth. He is gathering six special stones, each able to control an aspect of the universe, and when he gets them all together, he could become a god. No good things will happen if he pulls it off.
So, what did I like about this movie? Well, there were some epic action set pieces. You know those scenes in Wakanda from the trailers? Well, those were nothing. There were some epic brawls here in this movie. There were some genuinely funny moments in the movie as well. Also, the film surprised the heck out of me, as we got to see a character return from an earlier MCU film that I thought we'd never see again. That was a genuine surprise. It was also cool to see Peter Dinklage in the movie, too. Iron Man's armor was awesome in the movie.
Thanos himself is a great villain in this movie. Honestly, I like his motivations here much better than in the original comic storyline that inspired this film. In the original comic, he was desperately trying to impress a cosmic being that in a way, wasn't into him. The motivation here I felt made him a stronger, more interesting villain. Here, Thanos thinks he's doing the universe a service, but he's not.
I did think some of the romances in the film were a bit bland, but that I think was the fault of the previous movies not really doing much with them. Also, the big final battle did leave me asking one question: Why didn't Wakanda have any other defenses besides the soldiers and Avengers? I get it, Rule of Cool, and all that, but still it would have been nice to see some Wakandan land mines and turret guns in the battle.
So, do I recommend this movie. Yes. WATCH THIS MOVIE. If you've seen the films leading up to this, go watch it. If you haven't, then watch the other MCU movies before this one so you'd get caught up. Just see this movie. For the love of God, see this movie. Incredible cast, great action, funny moments, and the end will make you cry. Go watch it!
