July 2022 Nintendo Switch Online Game Updates, My Thoughts

The Nintendo Switch Online service keeps on growing! Three new games have been added to the service for the month of July! Let's look at the trailer!

Fighters History - Developed and published by Data East. Released in arcades worldwide in March 1993, and then was ported to the SNES in 1994. Japan got it earlier in May, whereas it arrived in North August. It has a unique feature in the weak point system. Basically, every character in the game has a spot in which you hit them repeatedly, they will be stunned temporarily.

The most interesting thing about this game is that it triggered a lawsuit. Capcom sued Data East because they felt that the game infringed on Street Fighter II. The suit ended in Data East's favor, as it was felt that certain elements and tropes that were lifted from SFII were necessary for the game's scenario and as such, were not protected by copyright.

To me, this looks like an average Street Fighter clone, nothing really special. The game has been praised for its controls, but other aspects have been criticized for their seeming unoriginality. I think that this game should only be visited if you're really curious, or you have nostalgic memories of this game.

Kirby's Avalanche - Co-developed by Compile, HAL Laboratory, and Compresto, and published by Nintendo. This game was released in February 1995 in Europe and April 1995 in North America. In Europe, the game was retitled Kirby's Ghost Trap. It's a reskinning of a Japanese game called Super Puyo Puyo using characters from the Kirby universe. This game is the only Kirby game to never officially be released in Japan. It's a puzzle game in the vein of Tetris and Dr. Mario. This game was praised for being fun and addicting, despite it bringing nothing new to the puzzle genre. This game looks like a ton of fun, being a fan of Tetris myself.

Daiva Story 6: Imperial of Nirsartia - I couldn't find any info about this game.

It looks like your standard horizontal-scrolling side shooter. You know, with some graphical tweaks, I can imagine this could be a Gundam game. Seriously. The robot/mecha/suit that you play as kind of resembles a Gundam. It clearly is another Japan-exclusive game, so if you're curious, I'd give it a try.

There isn't a lot to say about these games, I'm afraid. It is cool that we get another Japan-only game getting to have an official debut. That's always nice. I hope people do enjoy these games, though.

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you liked it, show it off! Take care of yourselves and each other! Stay safe, stay healthy, stay home, wash your hands often, wear a mask, and get vaccinated/boosted! See you next time!
