In 1984, Simpson/Bruckheimer Films and Paramount Pictures gave the world Beverly Hills Cop. Contrary to the film's title, the central cop, one Axel Foley, was actually a member of the Detroit Police Department. Portrayed by comedian/actor Eddie Murphy, his character in the film traveled to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of an old friend of his. The film would catapult Murphy into superstardom, and it made $316 million on a $13 million budget. It was the highest-grossing film released in the United States in 1984. Adjusted for inflation, it's the third highest grossing R-rated film of all time, only behind The Exorcist and The Godfather.
Beverly Hills Cop would be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, a BAFTA for Best Score, two Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, and Best Motion Picture Actor - Comedy or Musical (for Eddie Murphy), and win a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack Album, and a People's Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture.
The film would be followed by two sequels: Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987, and Beverly Hills Cop III in 1994. The second film was a box-office success despite mixed reviews, and the third was both a critical and commercial failure.
Let's look at the trailer!
Yup, our man Axel is back. Fun fact, Harrison Ford was considered for the role of Axel, but he turned it down. And Sylvester Stallone was originally cast as Foley. He rewrote the film to be more of a serious action piece but left before shooting was supposed to start. The film would be rewritten further when Murphy came on board, and many of the ideas Stallone used for this version (including the character's last name being Cobretti) would end up being used in the 1986 film Cobra.
"Admit it, Axel. You love being out on the streets. Despite your rep of being out of control."
Yeah, that dude is totally the bad guy.
Oh boy, not another gunfight!
Hey, Paul Reiser's back!
Axel is totally going through a window and getting arrested again.
And he went through a window again! 😂
And Serge is back, too!
Rosewood and Taggart! Rosewood and Taggart! Yeah, Axel, you're in Beverly Hills. You have a knack for annoying people in Beverly Hills, man.
I admit, I was pleasantly surprised to see this trailer. I love the Beverly Hills Cop movies (yes, even number three), and I had heard they were trying to get another one made for years. Although one thing confuses me, why call it Axel F? What's wrong with Beverly Hills Cop IV? I mean, the previous sequels were numbered, but not this one. A little consistency there would be nice. Ah, well. I'll give this a view when it hits Netflix. Thanks for reading this blog entry. If you liked it, show it off! Take care of yourselves and each other! Stay safe, stay healthy, stay home, wash your hands often, wear a mask, and get your vaccine/booster! See you next time!
