In 1982, Atari released the game known as Yars' Revenge for the Atari 2600. Developed by Howard Scott Warshaw, it was a multidirectional shooter game where you play as a Yar. A yar is an insectoid being that must shoot its way through a barrier to destroy the monster known as the Qotile with the Zorlon Cannon.
This game would be the best-selling original game for the console and is considered a classic game, despite getting mediocre reviews at the time. The game has been ported to the Game Boy Color, and the Game Boy Advance. In 2011, the game would be reimagined as Yar's Revenge for X-Box Live Arcade and Microsoft Windows. Also in 2011, a prequel called Yars' Revenger: First War was created for Facebook. Yars: Recharged, a reimagining of the original, was released in 2022 for various game consoles including the Switch, PlayStations 4/5, and X-Box Series X/S as part of the Recharged series.
