Legion of Super-Heroes #302 (August 1983)

When it comes to superheroes, drama is part of the job. Especially if you're a member of a team of them. People don't always get along, stuff from personal lives, romantic interludes, stuff like that. The Legion of Super-Heroes is not immune to this. After all, they're only human...in the metaphorical sense. Yes, there are members from Earth, but you know what I mean. And it does not stop, even after major upheavals and events. The comic we're looking at here this week helps show what I mean. This is Legion of Super-Heroes #302!

The cover is a Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt piece. It depicts Lightning Lad fighting his villainous elder brother Mekt, aka the long-time Legion menace called Lightning Lord. It's a really nice cover. What makes it look unique to me is the way it's colored. The heavy usage of yellow makes it look like they are really trying to tear each other apart with their electrokinetic powers.

"Family Matters"
Writers: Paul Levitz and Keith Giffen
Penciler: Keith Giffen
Inker: Larry Mahlstedt
Colorist: Carl Gafford
Letterer: John Costanza
Editor: Karen Berger
Executive Editor: Dick Giordano

The story begins at Legion HQ with Legion members Timber Wolf and Blok hanging out and shooting the breeze. The two get notified of an alert. Something big is coming!

They run to check it out, and they find that the HQ has a very uninvited guest.

"CABLE GUY!"

Dawnstar engages this lightning-lobbing madman, but he's able to bring her down with a little electric trick.

"Never. Touch. The. THREADS."

Say hello to Mekt Ranzz, aka Lightning Lord. He's the evil older brother of Garth Ranzz/Lightning Lad and Ayla Ranzz/Lightning Lass/Light Lass. And speaking of Garth, Mekt has been looking for him.

Dawnstar tells him that his younger brother and sister-in-law Imra Ardeen/Saturn Girl left several hours ago. Mekt believes it, as he thinks the Legion are terrible liars. Timber Wolf engages him, having defeated him previously in issue #241. Mekt gives him a Mighty Punch (Lightning-Charged Edition), assuring him that was a fluke. The madman sees Blok and decides "Yeah, Electric ain't good against Rock. I'm done here."

Meanwhile, over at the planet known as Weber's World (the planet that is the bureaucratic center of the United Planets), Element Lad and his Science Police officer girlfriend Shvaughn Erin are discussing their relationship and a mystery within the Legion...

On the planet, Brainiac 5's team are checking the place out. Unseen to them, someone is watching them.

The height of 2980s fashion right here.

Yup, it's the old Legion villain Emerald Empress, and she has plans. Cunning plans.

We next go to the hospital satellite known as Medicus One. There, Garth and Imra are discussing a medical issue with the Legion's physician Dr. Gym'll. And then Mekt bursts in. Like he's the 30th century version of the Kool-Aid Man.

Mekt wants to know where Ayla is. She had left the Legion in issue #294, and wants to offer some...guidance to his little sister. Yeah, thing about Mekt is, he's always had a strange obsession with his little sister, trying to get her to join him in the criminal life. He was a single birth in a world of twins, so maybe that's why. Who knows, he's nuts.

Anyway, the Ranzz brothers brawl and toss lightning all over the satellite.

During the fight, Mekt blows open the airlock, causing the brothers to end up drifting into space. Transparent spacesuits prevent the brothers from dying of exposure to space, but they ended up knocked silly. Out colder than an ice cube in the Arctic.

Elsewhere, we turn to Daxam, which is being repaired after its people were dominated by Darkseid during the Great Darkness Saga. Yeah, during that whole thing, Darkseid made them literally make the planet into a big old statue of his head.

The repairs are being aided by the UP. A group of Legionnaires are also visiting, presumably to check up on things. Mon-El (who is of Daxam himself), has dialogue that implies that the UP has done all this security simply because they are Daxamites. Wildfire comes in, alerting them of news from Earth. However, thanks to her precognitive powers, Nura Nal/Dream Girl is already aware of the news: Val Armorr/Karate Kid and Princess Projectra are getting married.

I can only see their marriage being a rather long and happy one, filled with many good times and possibly children. She also notes that Lightning Lord is attacking the headquarters, as seen earlier. She doesn't know how it'll go, but she's confident the Legionnaires on Earth can handle it. Besides, she has more important things to worry about: another one of her nails is broken.

Let's switch scenes again, shall we? We next go to the headquarters of the Science Police on Earth. Officer GiGi Cusimano is returning a file she "borrowed" (part of the storyline with Schvaughn and Element Lad), but she got busted.

With that out of the way, the brawl between Mekt and the Legionnaires continues on. Garth engages his mad elder brother and wins...with a bit of aid from his beloved wife Saturn Girl.

"You have been awake for six days straight, Mekt. TAKE A NAP."

Timber Wolf asks where Ayla went. Garth reveals that she never told him, nor has he heard from her since. He's never brought it up because he wanted to give her the peace and quiet that she deserved. Basically, Mekt's little quest...was all for nothing.

Back to Weber's World! The team of Legionnaires there prepares to leave, but the story ends with them getting blasted by the Emerald Eye of Ekron.

I enjoyed this issue. This is one of those issues that is really read best when you read it as part of reading a whole storyline. This is not a bad thing, nor does it mean that this comic wasn't an enjoyable read. It's just the nature of comic serialized storytelling. Youl'll encounter issues like this a lot, especially with a very long run. We do get plenty of storylines touched on, but it makes a lot of sense when you keep in mind just how many members there are in the Legion. It makes sense that a lot of them would have their own things going on.

The "main story" of the comic is the conflict between Mekt and Garth, two brothers who were both given incredible electrical power, but ended up going on different paths. This story does make Mekt come off as a bit one-dimensional, but the nature of superhero comics is that more often than not, the heroic characters get the lion's share of the spotlight. On a plus note, I got a bit of a chuckle out of some moments of this comic, like Dream Girl worrying about her nails.

As for Keith Giffen's art, we're starting to see it further evolve into his more recognizable style.

If you want to read this for yourself, I recommend tracking down the 2014 trade paperback Legion of Super-Heroes: The Curse. Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you liked it, show it off! Take care of yourselves and each other! See you next time!

Legion of Super-Heroes #297 (March 1983)

The Legion of Super-Heroes may be regarded as the greatest heroes of the far future, but like everyone else, the Legion are only human...well, human in the metaphorical sense as the Legion have many a member of the extraterrestrial persuasion. The members of the Legion, like many of us, have highs and lows in their lives, and are just as receptive of fate's kindnesses...and cruelties. They have their moments of triumph and tragedy. For Legion founder Cosmic Boy, that is especially true. The comic I'm looking at here focuses on him as he deals with one of the hardest moments of his life. This is Legion of Super-Heroes #297!

The cover is a Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt piece. It shows our man Cosmic Boy front and center using his powers, and he seemingly is under great strain. It's certainly an eye-catcher.

"Mettle"
Writer: Paul Levitz
Penciler: Keith Giffen
Inker: Larry Mahlstedt
Colorist: Carl Gafford
Letterer: John Costanza
Editor: Karen Berger
Executive Editor: Dick Giordano

The story begins with Rokk "Cosmic Boy" Krinn pulling a shuttle back to Earth with his magnetic powers, because he felt like reminding everyone how awesome he can be today.

The Science Police try to stop him, but the future's resident Master of Magnetism can easily fight them off while pulling at the shuttle thanks to his raw power and skill. He yanks out of the shuttle the people he was looking for.

Page 9, Panel 1

For context, these prisoners detonated a nuclear device in a neighborhood that Krinn's parents lived in in the last issue. And naturally, he wants to make them pay. Thankfully, before he can play executioner, his beau Lydda Jath, the Legion of Substitute Heroes member known as Night Girl, knocks him cold.

She reveals that Cosmic Boy also had witnessed what Darkseid did to the people of planet Daxam during the events of The Great Darkness Saga, and now with his family getting nuked...yeah. No wonder he lost it.

Elsewhere in the spaceport, Brainiac 5 is talking with fellow Legionnaire Tenzil "Matter-Eater Lad" Kem. Kem had gone insane after eating a device called the Miracle Machine. However, Brainiac 5 was able to cure him in issue #251. He's on his way to his homeworld of Bismoll (Get it?) to return to his life as a politician.

Later on, Krinn wakes up in a nice comfy bed. The little involuntary nap that Night Girl gave him seems to have done his mind a bit of good.

Lydda is with him, and gives him a nice hug, assuring him she's here for him. Aww.

It's at this point that we get a recap of the life of this Legion founder. Rokk Krinn is a native of the planet Braal. This world is known for having a very powerful natural magnetic field, and is also infested with metallic monsters. This allowed the people to evolve magnetokinetic powers. Naturally, the Krinn family also had those powers: Father Hu, mother Ewa, and their sons Rokk and Pol.

Page 13, Panel 3

Rokk reveals to Lydda that he was actually born on Earth, thanks to his parents emigrating to Earth to make a better life for themselves. But the work ran out on Earth, so they headed back to Braal. However, the planet also had its fair share of economic troubles. Rokk's childhood was a tough one as a result. Despite that, he showed himself to be a talented athlete in the sport of Magno-Ball. At the age of 14, Rokk was now a legal adult on Braal. As such, he left the planet to find work to help support his family. This reminds him he has to check on his folks. Lydda comes with him.

Elsewhere, Timber Wolf is in a foul mood. His girl Light Lass resigned and left the Legion, and it has left in a state. He decides to take an airbus to Boston and have some fun. He ends up missing the airbus.

He isn't in the mood to wait for another one, as it will take two hours. He leaps on the bus and rides it to Boston. At the hospital, Cosmic Boy heads to the ward his family is being treated in. The doctor tries to convince him to let the specialists inside do their work, but the Legionnaire basically tells her to shut her doctor face. He uses his magnetic powers to reprogram the systems that have the door locked, allowing him to come in, and locking the doctor and Lydda out. Lydda fixes that problem.

Page 18, Panels 7-10

Lydda tells the doctor more of Cosmic Boy's early history. The ship that took Cosmic Boy to Earth picked up some more passengers on the way to our little Pale Blue Dot: Garth Ranzz, who was looking for his missing brother. Imra Ardeen, who was on her way to the Science Police Academy. R.J. Brande, the supposed Richest Man in the Universe. This meeting would end up changing the universe.

Upon arrival to Earth, Imra telepathically picked up the thoughts of two men who planned to assassinate Brande. She tried to warn him, but he didn't hear it. Garth and Rokk used their electrokinetic and magnetokinetic powers to deal with the men and their guns. Brande was impressed by the three youths' bravery.

He convinced them they should use their powers to help combat criminals and injustice, bankrolling them with his fortune. And the Legion of Super-Heroes was born.

Page 21, Panel 5

At this point, Cosmic Boy has made his way to a databank, looking for information on his family's condition...and there is good and bad news. The good news is his little brother Pol and father Hu are being decontaminated. Pol is serious, but so far, he's staying stable. Hu's prognosis is guarded, but it's likely he'll recover as well. However, his mother Ewa has already died. Rokk blames himself for this, as he brought his family to Earth thanks to R.J. Brande paying for the Legion's expenses, and presumably giving the members generous allowances. At the time, Rokk couldn't spend a lot of time with his family due to the Legion expanding from three members to eighteen. And then there was his romance with Night Girl.

Lydda asks Rokk if there is anything she can do to help, and he tells her there is one thing.

Page 24, Panel 1

Yeah, that'll hurt.

Using magnetic currents, Cosmic Boy is on the hunt, and he wants blood. At the Metropolis Spaceport, Chameleon Boy arrives on a shuttlecraft, with Sun Boy, Phantom Girl, and Ultra Boy waiting to greet him. He thanks them for supporting him through his trial, imprisonment, and his being pardoned. He reveals he plans to visit his father, and that he has lost his shapeshifting powers. He has no idea how.

He should have realized that game of Drunk Poker with that Khund would come back to bite him. But that issue will have to be tabled for now, as the sounds of screams are heard from the shuttle. The Legionnaires discover that Cosmic Boy has rampaged his way through the Science Police guarding the shuttle because he wants the heads of the criminals who nuked his family. The magnetokinetic finds and tortures the criminals. He intends to use his powers to kill them. They beg him for mercy, but it falls on deaf ears. He stops when he seemingly hears a woman yell "NO". I think it's intended to be Ewa, considering the story, but it's unclear. Cosmic Boy stops, asking what he's doing. He walks away, saying that he will not kill them in his mother's name, as it makes him no better than them.

The Legion sees this, and are grateful they didn't have to step in. Phantom Girl says she never saw Cosmic Boy so violent, nor him displaying such power. She never imagined that she had it in him. Chameleon Boy bets he didn't either. Cosmic Boy flies off, but not before he gives the criminals a last bit of pain.

Page 29, Panels 4-7

After all, he said he wouldn't kill the men. He never said he wouldn't hurt them.

I did enjoy this issue. The Legion of Super-Heroes can be a very large team, so it can be quite difficult to give the members all a fair share of spotlight. It's why this spotlight issue is such a nice surprise. Cosmic Boy is, more often than not, considered one of the more level-headed members of the team, but his actions in this issue are rather understandable. He's grieving. And lashing out. I would have preferred seeing the Legionnaires try to stop him and he goes through them, that helping him realize that what he's doing will only make things worse.

If you want to read this story for yourself, I recommend tracking down the 2014 trade paperback Legion of Super-Heroes: The Curse. Thanks for reading this blog entry!

Legion of Super-Heroes Trailer, My Thoughts

No matter what the era, there is always a need for heroes. In the far future of the DC Universe, the Legion of Super-Heroes defend the universe against all sorts of vile villainy. First appearing in Adventure Comics #247 (April 1958), the Legion has gone through various changes over the years. They also have traditionally been tied heavily to the mythos of two other DC Super-Heroes: Superman and Supergirl.

The Legion has always been a rather popular super team, members of the group appearing in various other media, most notably having their own animated series in 2006. And now, they're getting their own direct-to-video animated movie alongside Supergirl. Let's look at the trailer!

Wait, were there no places where Supergirl could train in the present day, Superman? Maybe she could work with the Titans or something. Sounds to me like you're just pawning her off, Supes.

Hey, Mon-El! I wonder if this version has the Silver/Bronze Age origin. Considering Superman's seemingly familiarity with the Legion here, it's certainly possible.

I like Dawnstar's design. Also, her having energy wings is a really cool idea.

Bouncing Boy may seem like a joke, and his power may seem stupid. But think about this. Ever been hit in the face by those big rubber balls they use in dodgeball games? Now imagine that, but the ball is a whole human being.

Yeah.

Arm-Fall-Off Boy?! Much as I appreciate the deep cut, I have to admit, I'm surprised they used him. Although, he would be handy for rocket punch jokes.

Batman's just mad nobody remembers him in the Legion's future.

You'd think Superman would have told Kara about Brainiac 5.

Eh, it would not be surprising if it turned out the Legion took a cue from the Archie gang and just hung out at the malt shop.

The Dark Circle, eh? An interesting choice for bad guys. I wonder if they're the ones responsible for the Legionnaires vanishing...

Legion vs. Dark Circle! Round 1!

Well, this looks like a fun little movie. I've been meaning to watch some of these DTV animated movies. Mainly Justice League vs. The Fatal Five and Batman: Soul of the Dragon. I do like the Legion, so I can imagine this will be fun. Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you liked it, show it off! Take care of yourselves, and each other! Stay safe, stay safe, stay home, wash your hands often, wear a mask, and get your vaccine/booster! See you next time!

Legion of Super-Heroes #291 (September 1982)

Back in February 2018, I took a look at Legion of Super-Heroes #290 (August 1982), the first part of one of my personal favorite Legion stories: The Great Darkness Saga. In that issue, the far-future superteam found themselves under attack from a new threat: A group of mysterious beings encountering an equally-mysterious master. This "master" attacked various sources of great magical power, clearly planning to become quite the threat.

Last issue, the Legion dealt with the first waves of attacks from these mysterious servants of darkness. It left the Legion utterly clueless as to who was their master. However they did manage to capture one of the servants, and maybe they might finally get to the bottom of who their master was...and what their goal is. So, with that out of the way, let's join the Legion as they continue their battle against the servants in Legion of Super-Heroes #291!

The cover is a Keith Giffen and Romeo Tanghal piece. I like it. It depicts the Servants of Darkness' mysterious master making a triumphant pose. And in the tradition of anime, his pose puts out an aura that has got the Legion making JoJo poses. And I think Mordru on the bottom there just got his mid utterly blown.

"Great Darkness Saga, Chapter Two: ...a Sign of Darkness Dawning"
Writer: Paul Levitz
Penciler: Keith Giffen
Inker: Larry Mahlstedt
Colorist: Carl Gafford
Letterer: Annette Kawecki
Editor: Laurie Sutton
Executive Editor: Joe Orlando

The story begins with the Legion examining one of the mysterious servants of darkness that they managed to capture in the last issue.

"Well, we at least know Sun Boy is not the father."

The examination had revealed something rather shocking. This servant appears to have been made from the DNA of one Lydea Mallor, a member of the 20th/21st century era intergalactic police force known as L.E.G.I.O.N. Lydea was also the ancestor of the Legion's very own Tasmia Mallor, aka Shadow Lass. Despite the advanced tech of the future, the Legion still has no idea of who sent this servant. And Shadow Lass is understandably shaken up. Element Lad summons the two to a Legion meeting, but Shadow Lass doesn't feel up to attending. Mon-El agrees to skip it with her.

We next look in on a planet called Avalon. It's a primitive world, largely unchartered. It's located on the borders of United Planets territory...and it's the last known location of the villainous sorcerer Mordru. The mysterious villain arrives there and frees the magician from his earthy prison.

"Aw COME ON, MAN! I just got free! This is some bull!"

However, the villain is not there to propose an alliance (even thought Mordru clearly wouldn't be interested in one anyway), he there for the malicious magician's power. Back on Earth, Chameleon Boy is talking to his lawyer. In the past, the Durlan Detective had gathered a group of Legionnaires to act on growing tensions with an alien race known as the Khunds. The mission was a disaster, and the shapeshifter was arrested for treason. But his lawyer has bad news: He's basically screwed.

Meanwhile, in the Legion's HQ, the Lydea Mallor-esque servant stirs. Uh oh...

We then head to the meeting room of the HQ, where the Legion are debating whether they should hold the Legion leader's election, consider Chameleon Boy's...situation.

The Legion are major gossips, based on the word balloons here. Ultra Boy wants to lead the team again, but he wants the election postponed out of respect for Chameleon Boy. But Element Lad (the current Legion leader) basically tells him "He got himself into this mess, the election goes on". Then Dream Girl announces that she's in the running for Legion leadership, too. Yeah, keep this in mind. Dream Girl's power is precognition. You can guess why she's choosing now to run for Legion leadership.

Speaking of her precognition, she gets a vision. It's of her sister Mysa on their homeworld of Naltor, and she'll be attacked by the mysterious servants of darkness that the Legion encountered last issue. Two more crises have popped up as well: A massive breakout on the prison planet of Takron-Galtos, and the liberation of Mordru.

Mon-El, Shadow Lass, Phantom Girl, and Ultra Boy go deal with the breakout on Takron-Galtos. They corral up the prisoners, and find the center of the destruction: The Time Trapper's cell. The villain's special cell is busted up...and the Trapper himself looks like he's taken quite a thrashing. They realized that he's not responsible for this. So who is? Well, a dark warp in space reveals who.

"Hello, Legion! I'm the conductor for your ride on the PAIN TRAIN!"

The servant wrecks the four Legionnaires. Ultra Boy and Mon-El try to pursue the creature, but he manages to escape them. They realize that the servants' master must have come here to get the Trapper's power. We then look back on the Legion's HQ. Superboy is visiting Saturn Girl. She's watching over Lightning Lad, who is ill. He's got some strange electrical fever in his brain. Superboy remarks that he's going back to his home century to celebrate his parents' wedding anniversary.

This sends Saturn Girl into tears. She tells the Boy of Steel to leave. You see, being from the future, she knows that eventually, Jonathan and Martha Kent will die of a fever similar to the one that's inflicting Lightning Lad right now. This was established in Superman #161 (May 1963).

On Avalon, a team of Legionnaires (Dawnstar, Wildfire, Brainiac 5, Timber Wolf, Element Lad, and Star Boy) find Mordru, but he's not in great shape. He's normally a threat that requires the entire team to face, but now he's a babbling mess, ranting about the dark and the cold.

On Naltor, we join a third group of Legionnaires (Dream Girl, Light Lass, Invisible Kid, Sun Boy, and Blok) to meet Dream Girl's sister. And Mysa Nal makes her entrance in style.

"My name is Mysa, and I am the baddest witch."

Blok is entranced by the almost-spectral beauty before him. Sun Boy notices the crowd around them has dispersed. Most people on Naltor have some sort of precognitive ability, so they wouldn't do this unless there's a big communal vision of something really bad going down. Mysa Nal didn't have this power, so she studied sorcery instead. And true to the Naltorians' prediction, something bad is happening.

"Gaze upon my gloriously-sized head, Legion! GAZE UPON MY HEAD!"

The Legion engage Big-Head here, while the Invisible Kid tries to follow one of the portals the servants used to travel to learn their source. The servants' master is amused to see him. Yes, Invisible Kid's power is useless here. The master lets the rookie Legionnaire gaze upon him, and then gives him a taste of eye beams.

Sun Boy blasts Big-Head, and notices that the large-craniumed servant really seems to dislike it when his flames turn yellow. Big-Head's master calls for him, deciding that the White Witch isn't worth it after all. Blok and Light Lass find Invisible Kid, shuddering like he had just seeing the scariest horror movie in the history of the universe.

The newbie Legionnaire needs a doctor...or five. Physically he's fine but his mind...not so much. The story ends with Dream Girl getting another vision: The Legion battling the servants of darkness on a place called Sorcerer's World...and losing. Badly.

There's also a little back-up tale! Let's take a look at that, too!

"Of Leaders and Lovers"
Writer: Paul Levitz
Penciler: Keith Giffen, Larry Mahlstedt
Inker: Unknown
Colorist: Unknown
Letterer: John Costanza
Editor: Laurie Sutton
Executive Editor: Joe Orlando

The story begins with Saturn Girl sitting at Lightning Lad's bedside, She's trying to use her telepathy to soothe her electrokinetic husband's fevered mind. She gets a call from Cosmic Boy. The far-future master of magnetism is conducting the vote for a new Legion leader over a remote hookup as due to all the chaos, it can't be done in person. Huh, election chaos. How timely... Anyway, Cosmic Boy gets ambushed.

"Outta my way! There's a sale at Bloomingdale's!"

It's the Lydea Mallor-based servant of darkness that the Legion had captured and examined earlier. The two try to fight her off, but it's no good. Thankfully, Lightning Lad is able to come to the rescue, by frying her with lightning.

"Oh nass, I need a drink..."

Later, Lightning Lad is resting. His fever has broken, and it looks like he may be finally on the road to recovery. Saturn Girl theorized that the stress of his time as Legion leader may have caused his powers to go bonkers, but now it's seemingly corrected itself. She and Cosmic Boy briefly discuss being Legion leaders, until Cosmic Boy gets some news. A new Legion leader has been elected, and it's Dream Girl. Because of course it was. She can see the future, after all.

This was an enjoyable issue. There are plenty of nice character moments here, like Blok being spellbound by the White Witch. Their romance is not talked about very much in my experience. I don't know why. We also get some further advancing of the main story, as we discover that one of the servants was made from the DNA of an ancestor of a Legionnaire, and we get another possible hint of another of the servants' potential DNA donors. We also still don't have any actual idea of who the servant is, which is also rather nice.

My one question is...why Lydea Mallor? I get she's an ancestor of a Legionnaire, but Lydea Mallor wasn't exactly a major heroine. Why didn't the master use someone like Wonder Woman, or the Flash? It certainly would not be beyond their ability to get the DNA to do so. Maybe because those two heroes tend to not have any major connections to the Legion? I mean there's the Tornado Twins and all for the Flash, but did the Legion stories ever establish what happened to the Amazons? Just a thought.

The art here is rather well done. The backup tale's art does feel a bit jarring, despite the art being drawn by the same artist that did the main story. This is where Giffen's art started to evolve into the more Jose Munoz-esque style he would use for the rest of his Legion tenure, with the stocky figures and the shadowy faces at times. It never really "clicked" with me personally, but I never really was overly bothered by it, either.

All in all, I liked the issue. If you want to read it for yourself, I recommend tracking down the 2002 trade paperback Legion of Super-Heroes: The Great Darkness Saga. Yeah, I own a very old trade. They did a reprint in 2013, though. You may have an easier time getting that one.
