Happy National Ice Cream Sandwich Day!
This day has been celebrated since at least 2005, and it's all about celebrating these cold treats.
The ice cream sandwich is a novelty food made from ice cream put between two thin biscuits called wafers, bread or most notably, cookie.
The exact origins of ice cream sandwiches are actually unknown. But what is known is that ice cream vendors in New York City have been selling these as early as 1899. These early snacks were actually sold between two sheets of paper and called "hokey-pokeys". Later, thin biscuits made of cookie would be used, but it's unknown who innovated this. The first patent involving ice cream sandwiches was recorded in 1921 for a machine dedicating to making ice cream sandwiches.
Other countries have also embraced the concept of the ice cream sandwich, with their own little twists. For example, in Singapore, ice cream sandwiches can use ice cream flavors like honeydew, red bean, and even sweet corn. In Iran, traditional ice cream called bastani is used for the center, sandwiched between two wafers. German ice cream sandwiches use Neapolitan ice cream in the center.
