Today is International Dog Day!
Humans and dogs have a very long history together. In fact, dogs may be one of the first animals that humans have domesticated, as far back as 25,000 years ago. In fact, humans may have been domesticating dogs before they developed agriculture! They were domesticated from wolves.
Humans have bred dogs for a variety of reasons, from companionship to protection. They are truly versatile animals. Dogs are one of the more popular pets in the United States, present in 34-40% of American homes. And it's believed that there are around 700 million to 1 billion dogs in the world. That's a lot of puppers.
DNA sequencing has allowed scientists to discover all dogs have a common ancestor, a long-extinct species of wolf that was not related to modern wolves. There are 450 official breeds of dogs, thanks to breeding starting during the Victorian Era. In fact, there are more breeds of dogs than any other mammal.
