Avengers Forever #6 (May 1999)

The story begins with Wasp and Genis-Vell fleeing the wall of white that is destroying the timeline they had traveled to. Luckily, they managed to make it to Time Sphinx that was outside the timestream. Rick Jones guides their chronosphere to the Time Sphinx when he sees two images on video screens that confuse him.

He also sees two more images that confuse him: The double wedding of the Vision and Scarlet Witch and Mantis with the Swordsman from , and Immortus draining Thor's hammer Mjolnir to save the planet Phantus in . The screens also show him presiding over Vance Astro meeting his younger self in , Immortus secretly meeting with the Badoon, presiding over the marriage of Machine Man and Jocasta (likely from the Martian War timeline that Captain America and Giant-Man are in at this point). Jan and Rick are very confused by this. Why are these images being shown? Genis believes that this was triggered by himself and Wasp fleeing the destroyed 50s Avengers timeline, like the Time Sphinx is trying to hint at Immortus's bigger game...

(Hmmmm...

In the Martian War timeline, Captain America is mourning at a statue of the Avengers, made in tribute to them. When was that made? Jocasta comes to pick him up, as it's time. You see, the Avenger Army now finally has a change to get a final and decisive victory over the Martians. But they have to travel to Wakanda to do it. Why Wakanda? Well, there is one famous thing in the African nation that may be the key to victory.

Page 6, Panel 4

The Great Vibranium Mound. The gigantic mountain of the alien mystery metal whose properties once allowed the nation to become a technological wonderland. But that was in the past, before the Martians invaded. Even Wakanda was not unscathed. There's not a lot of Vibranium left in the Mound, but the Black Panther hopes that there's enough left to power a fleet of ships. The ships can transport the army to Mars, where they can finally finish the Martians off. However, there is a problem.

The Avengers try to fight the Kirby-esque monsters. During the battle, Black Panther discovers their leader.

Meet Mourning Prey, who first appeared in . She is the apparent leader or queen of these insectoid monsters. Pym takes her down with a giant clap. Cap approaches her, but Prey puts him under a hypnotic spell and reaches out for him. Back at the Time Sphinx, Rick points out more images, like the Grim Reaper and the Space Phantom's team-up in Avengers #106-108. This worries Wasp, as it was thought there was only one Space Phantom.

Back to the Old West! As Hawkeye, Yellowjacket and Songbird try to get their Chronosphere back, the Two-Gun Kid has rounded himself up a posse.

Meet the Night Rider, the Ringo Kid, Rawhide Kid, and Kid Colt. They're gonna slap some leather and take down Kang! The Avengers witness them ride out, only to get attacked by the townspeople like they're zombified or something. Kang reveals that his little hotel/saloon has been hiding a secret citadel.

Page 12, Panel 2

Songbird gets the other two Avengers with her to leave, pointing out this is before the events of Avengers # , and as such, this will be dealt with. The three Avengers manage to infiltrate the Citadel and find the Chronosphere. Then Yellowjacket KOs her.

(judo chop)

Well, not exactly with a judo chop. In the Martian War future, Mourning Prey explains...well, not with words. More like through empathic abilities. She reveals that she wandered around lost and confused after waking up in a Martian lab. It was here that Immortus found her and took her to the Great Vibranium Mound. The alien metal was a perfect food source for her and her children.

This does create a conflict. There's not much Vibranium left. Mourning Prey needs it to feed her children, but it's also needed to power the spacecraft that Black Panther's Avengers Resistance will use to finally end the Martian War. There's also another problem.

Page 16, Panel 3

Jocasta is about to give birth, but there's something wrong. Her mechanical baby is shaking, rattling, and rolling. And the shaking will likely kill them both. Vibranium can help because of its properties, mainly easing the shaking. Looks like the King of Wakanda has a choice to make. Use the remaining Vibranium to help Mourning Prey and Jocasta...or use it to take the battle to the Martians.

Back to the Old West! Hawkeye confronts Yellowjacket about his clobbering Songbird. He explains that Songbird had been acting like a "cold fish" to him earlier. That's because in her time, she and the Wasp are best friends...and Yellowjacket here comes from just before he was about to marry Janet. And he kept flirting with Songbird.

()

Anyway, she suddenly warmed up to Yellowjacket, which to his credit, he found very odd. It's revealed that Songbird was being impersonated by a Space Phantom.

Page 17, Panel 4

Yellowjacket believes that the Phantom was there to lure them to Immortus's clutches. In the Martian War timeline, the Vibranium helps Jocasta successfully give birth to her robotic child. In this dark time, the arrival of new life brings a bit of happiness. Even Mourning Prey is overjoyed at the occasion. Outside, Cap and Black Panther do some conversing. They both notice something. Only Wakanda still has any ability to go to space in this timeline, because it still has Vibranium. Mourning Prey was brought to Wakanda, and her children need Vibranium to survive...and Jocasta needed the metal to ensure the successful birth of her child. It's almost as if someone engineered it this way.

(Coincidence?)

Cap and Hank take their leave, wishing Panther luck. He's got a world to rebuild, but maybe...there's some hope. Back at the
