Written by Earth, Wind, and Fire singer Maurice White and songwriter Allee Willis, "September" is one of Earth, Wind, and Fire's most famous songs. Funny enough, the song wasn't released on September 21, it was released in November. It was released as a single on November 18, 1978 to be exact. The song would be included on the compilation album The Best of Earth, Wind, and Fire Vol. 1 released shortly afterward as a way to boost its sales.

Maurice White had claimed that he included the date "21st night" because he liked the way it sounded when he sang. However, in 2019, White's wife Marilyn said that 21st September was the expected birthdate of her and Maurice's son Kahbran. So, yeah. The song likely was a way of welcoming a child into the world.

"September" has gone on to be one of Earth, Wind, and Fire's greatest hits, selling millions of units both in record and digital form. In 2018, the Library of Congress added the song to its National Recording Registry, considering it "culturally, historically, and aesthetically important".
