Meet Team Skull Trailer, My Thoughts

Another new teaser has been released for Pokémon Sun and Moon, this one giving us a view of the villains of these games: Team Skull! We also get to meet some more of the new Pokémon native to the Alola region. Let's take a look!

The first new Pokémon we meet is called Wishiwashi. I think it may be modeled on a minnow or a sardine. It's a cute little Pokémon. However, once it gets to a high enough level, it's got a special feature. It can use its ability "Schooling", to summon a bunch of its friends and take on its School Form. Its School Form is awesome. It looks like a mix between a monster and a submarine. Can you imagine the look on an opposing trainer's face when this form shows up? It looks really cool!

The next new Pokémon we meet is called Pyukumuku. I think it's modeled on a sea cucumber. It has an ability called Innards Out. I think how it works if if Pyukumuku is given a hit that makes it faint, the Pokémon that deals the hit takes some damage. It does briefly show that it can send out its innards and they form something like a hand. Weird.

Next, we meet Morelull, a fungus-like Pokémon. I get the impression this is Alola's answer to Shroomish. Not much to say about it, really.

The trailer also reveals the villains of the games, Team Skull. The name is a not to the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, I believe. I never played those. Team Skull seems to possibly be more like a street gang than an organized crime racket like Team Rocket. The grunts look like they assembled their uniforms from clothing they got from Hot Topic, instead of formal uniforms. Their theme seems to also have a bit of a hip-hop vibe to it. It's a nice beat.

The "Big Sister" of Team Skull is Plumeria. What is up with her hair? Is that even hair, or is that ribbons glued to her head? I'm guessing Plumeria may be a field commander or a second-in-command of Team Skull.

Because we meet the Big Boss, a man named Guzma. The footage reveals he may have a past with Professor Kukri, as he mentions they were both misfits who failed to become captains, whatever that means. Hmm, that is interesting. I wonder what their mutual past is like...

We also have more regional variants! Meowth gets a Dark-type variant! It has a slyer look to it, which is pretty neat. I do wonder, though? If this evolves into a Persian, will it become a regular Persian, or is there also a Dark variant Persian. We have seen that Alola Vulpixes and Sandshrews do have evolutions that maintain the variation from standard, so I think we can assume there are Alola Persians, and they may be Dark-type, too.

Marowak also gets a variant! Its variant is Fire/Ghost, and it's got an awesome animation where it twirls its fire-ended bone like it's a bo staff. Its design is also really neat. A dark brown body with green flames burning on its bone. I think we may also see Alola variants for Cubone, its pre-evolution. Makes sense, based on what we've seen so far.

Raichu's Alola variant is Electric/Psychic. It flies by surfing on its tail. This Alola redesign has to be one of my favorites so far. It's recognizable, but there are some slight changes that show this Raichu is different from the standard. I am now wondering if there are Alola Pichu and Pikachu, too.

I wonder if some of these variants may be version-exclusive, some to Sun, and some to Moon. What got me thinking that was the reveal that Alola has variants of Vulpix and Sandshrew. Back in the day, they were version-exclusive, Vulpix and Sandshrew originally exclusive to the original Blue version. It's possible.

I can't wait for this game.
