World UFO Day

Today is World UFO Day!

The purpose of this day is to encourage watching the skies for potential signs that other beings are visiting us. There were originally two days it was celebrated: Today, and on June 24. Some celebrate it on this day because on that day in 1947, American aviator Kenneth Arnold claimed to have seen nine strange objects flying near Mount Rainier, Washington. This is considered the first modern UFO sighting. In fact, his description of the objects as "Like a saucer if you skip it on the water" would lead to the term "flying saucer".

Others chose to celebrate on this day because it's the day it's believed a UFO crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. In fact, enthusiasts regularly gather in Roswell to celebrate UFOs. It was believed this day was first celebrated in 2001 by UFO researcher Haktan Akdogan.

So, why do UFOs capture the imagination? I think it's because humanity has long wondered one thing about the stars probably ever since we first looked up at them: Are we alone out there in the universe? Considering the known size of the universe, even though we haven't found any genuine signs of other intelligent life, it's still rather likely that there are other such lifeforms out there. After all, the universe is massive. Who says there aren't other Earth-like worlds out there that could potentially have advanced beings living on them? The idea has truly sparked the imagination, inspiring all sorts of stories about humans contacting aliens. Some optimistic, other pessimistic. Some played for humor, others for horror. While there have been many claims of extraterrestrial sightings, the vast majority of them have been debunked as rather mundane things like weather phenomena.

So keep looking up at the stars. Who knows? Maybe we will meet extraterrestrials. Hopefully, it will be a peaceful and friendly event if it does happen. Thanks for reading this blog entry!
