Trials of Mana Remake Trailer, My Thoughts

In 1995, Square Enix released the game Seiken Densetsu 3, aka Trials of Mana for the Super Famicom (The Japanese Super Nintendo). I talked about this game a little bit in my look at the Collection of Mana trailer. The game was heavily praised for its graphics and gameplay, and was given more mixed reviews for its plot and characters. The game was regarded as one of the very best to ever come out for the Super Famicom.

Despite the positive reviews, the game was never released in North America...at least during the Super Nintendo's heyday, even though Secret of Mana did rather well in the West at the time (selling 330,000 to 500,000 copies depending on the source). This was due to software bugs that would have prevented a timely release. A fan translation was released in 1999. In 2019, the game would finally be officially brought to North America in the Collection of Mana, where it got the name "Trials of Mana". It was also announced that like Secret of Mana before it, Trials of Mana would get a 3D remake. Let's take a look at the announcement trailer!

It would have been neat if they did that in the vein of the old Square logo.

To me, that just sounds like the realization they left you behind and forgot you weren't with them.

Hey look, knock off Falkor!

Duran is very proud of his abs. He worked hard on those, dang it!

Crimson Wizard. Wonder if he's related to the Scarlet Witch? Or maybe the Crimson Cowl.

Angela's got that Psylocke hair.

Charlotte is cute.

Goremand. Clever.

Kevin the Beastman is the most awesome one. Because he's a lion man.

Hawkeye is neat, too.

Belladonna is totally a bad guy.

I can't imagine Riesz (Ri-ez? Ri-uz?)'s armor being very good at being protective.

Faerie is already less annoying than Navi.

The 3D models and battles look amazing.

April 2020, eh? I can get this on my birthday month! Hooray!

I've heard some criticisms of the 3D Secret of Mana remake, so I'm hoping that those problems got addressed in this one. As I said earlier, Trials of Mana was criticized for having seemingly flat characters and plotlines. This would be a great opportunity to expand on them a bit, make the plotlines and characters more robust and complex. I hope they do that.

Thanks for reading this blog entry! If you liked it, spread it around! See you next time!
