Harlan Thrombey was a crime novelist. His novels were considered epic works, multiple times he graced the New York Times Best-Seller List. So, it was rather appropriate that his death end up causing a murder mystery. And that's the tale of Knives Out, the black comedy whodunit from the mind of Rian Johnson. Johnson wrote, produced, and directed this film. He was influenced by mystery works like Murder on the Orient Express and Clue. I got to watch this when I was in Texas visiting family. So, do I think this film should be seen as a mystery classic, or is it a cold case not worth solving? Read on and find out!
I was incredibly impressed by this cast. Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana de Almas, Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Chris Evans, Rian Johnson really put together a spectacular cast. Evans's performance was surprising to me. You see, I know him best as Captain America. The character he plays in this film is...well, Cap's complete opposite personality-wise. Evans really showed his range.
However, Evans was the only one who put in a great show. Daniel Craig played Benoit Blanc, an eccentric private detective with a Southern drawl. He was a fun character, I would not be against seeing him in a sequel. In fact, I have to praise all the actors in this movie. They all turned in great performances, and were a joy to watch.
The story has some clever twists, plenty of laughs, and some social commentary. It also has some surprisingly heartwarming moments. Its something that warrants multiple viewings, as there's plenty of hidden details and also a hilarious Chekhov's gun. Also, the end of the film does provide a bit of balm for this mean ol' world we live in.
I'm sorry that this review isn't much, but I don't want to spoil anything. Watch this film. It is great. You have to see it for yourself.
