Yup, this year celebrates America's 242nd birthday! On this day, 242 years ago, the Continental Congress declared themselves no longer part of the British Empire and their own nation: The United States of America. It declared its independence with a statement called, basically, the Declaration of Independence, mainly written by Thomas Jefferson.
This day is often celebrated with barbecues, picnics, and many non-essential government institutions (like the postal service) are closed for the day, as it's a federal holiday.
On this day, talk with some family, treat yourself to some barbecue, and enjoy the fireworks! And please be considerate of veterans who suffer PTSD with the fireworks.
